What's Inside This Guide
I've lost count how many times I've hauled a guest's backpack up those stone steps. No joke. The Golden Summit looks like a postcard, but getting there without a plan? A nightmare for most foreigners.
Here's the thing: most online guides are either in Chinese or assume you have a local friend. This Mount Emei English guide is written from my perspective as a tour leader who has dealt with lost passports, frozen credit cards, and monkey attacks. So yes, it's practical.
One quick truth: the only way to avoid the worst crowds and secure a sunrise view is to be on the first scenic bus from Baoguo Temple at 6:00 AM. Do that, and you're golden. Now let's dig into the details.
How to Get to Mount Emei from Chengdu
Take the high-speed train from Chengdu East Station to Emeishan Station. It runs frequently—about every 30 minutes—and takes 1 hour 15 minutes. Ticket price is around 65 RMB (about $9 USD). Book via Trip.com or 12306.cn (English interface available).
Once you arrive at Emeishan Station, don't get fooled by taxi drivers offering a ride to the summit. You need to go to Baoguo Temple Tourist Center (the main entrance). Bus K1 from the station takes 20 minutes and costs 2 RMB. Alternatively, a DiDi (Chinese Uber) is about 25 RMB.
Pro tip: The scenic bus from Baoguo Temple up the mountain runs from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The last bus down from Leidongping (where the cable car to Golden Summit starts) leaves at 6:00 PM. Plan accordingly.
Mount Emei Tickets & WeChat Booking Headache
First, the bad news: you must book your Mount Emei ticket in advance via the WeChat mini-program called “峨眉山景区” (Mount Emei Scenic Area). The mini-program is in Chinese only.
Good news: you can ask your hotel receptionist or a Chinese friend to help you book. Or use a travel agency like Klook. Ticket prices (as of 2025):
| Ticket Type | Price (RMB) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Adult (peak season Apr-Nov) | 160 | Includes scenic area, not cable cars |
| Adult (off-season Dec-Mar) | 110 | Same coverage |
| Student (with ID) | 80 | Half price |
| Senior (60+ with passport) | Free | Must show passport at gate |
⚠️ Reality check: The mini-program doesn't accept international credit cards. You'll need WeChat Pay or Alipay. If you don't have those, buy a physical ticket at the gate—but expect a long queue (30+ minutes) during peak hours. I always tell my guests: install Alipay before you leave home, link your Visa, and you're set.
Best Time to Visit Mount Emei (and When to Skip)
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer the best weather—clear skies, moderate temperatures. Summer (June-August) is rainy and crowded with Chinese tourists on school break. Winter (December-February) is spectacular: snow-covered temples, but cable cars may close due to wind. I personally love late October: golden leaves and fewer people.
Golden Summit sunrise: Aim for a clear weather forecast. Check the official Mount Emei weather (app or website) the night before. If it says “cloudy” you might still catch a break, but “rain” means skip the sunrise effort. On a good day, the first cable car up from Leidongping departs at 6:30 AM. Be at the cable car station by 6:15.
Hiking Routes: Which Path Should You Take?
Two main trails up the mountain: the Front Trail (from Baoguo Temple) and the Back Trail (from Wannian Temple). Most hikers do a partial hike and take the scenic bus for the rest.
Front Trail (Classic but Tough)
Starts at Baoguo Temple, goes through Qingyin Pavilion, then up 99 Turns and the Monkey Zone. To Golden Summit it's about 50 km and 2 days. Most hikers break it into two days with an overnight at Xixiang Chi (Elegant Pond) or Jinding (Golden Summit). Elevation gain: 2,500 meters. I've done this hike three times—the last 2 km before Golden Summit are brutal. Bring knee braces.
Back Trail (Less Crowded)
Start at Wannian Temple (take bus from Baoguo Temple to Wannian Temple stop, then walk up). This trail offers more shade and fewer steps—but still long. You reach Golden Summit in about 6-7 hours if you're fast.
| Route | Duration | Difficulty | Scenery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front Trail (full hike) | 2 days | Hard | Monkeys, waterfalls, cliffs |
| Bus to Leidongping + cable car | Half day | Easy | Views from cable car |
| Hybrid (hike + bus) | 1 day | Moderate | Mix of forest and summit |
My recommendation: If you only have one day, take the scenic bus from Baoguo Temple to Leidongping (2 hours), then cable car up to Golden Summit. Spend 2-3 hours at the top, cable car down, bus back. You'll skip the hardest hiking but still see the best view.
Where to Stay: Hotels on the Mountain vs. Base
On the Mountain (near Golden Summit)
- Jinding Grand Hotel (4-star): Right at the summit, basic clean rooms, about 800-1200 RMB/night in peak season. Has heating and electric blankets (essential in winter). Breakfast included.
- Xixiang Chi Hostel (budget): Dorm beds from 150 RMB, private rooms 400 RMB. Popular with backpackers; book via Trip.com.

Base of the Mountain (Baoguo Temple area)
- Emei Mountain Jinding Hotel (Baoguo branch): Good value, clean, 400-600 RMB. Near bus station.
- Mountain View Hostel: Dorm from 80 RMB, English-speaking staff. They can help book tickets.
Wi-Fi is generally stable on the mountain but speeds drop in heavy fog. Most hotels have Wi-Fi but the signal near Golden Summit can be weak. Bring a portable power bank—no outlets on the summit itself.
What to Eat: Local Dishes You Must Try
Mount Emei's cuisine is part of the Sichuan food family. Here are my go-to picks:
- Emei Rock Casserole (峨眉山岩锅): A clay pot dish with pork, mushrooms, and local pickled peppers. Spicy and hearty. Try it at Old Street Casserole Restaurant near Baoguo Temple. Price: 68 RMB. They have an English menu.
- Jiaojuan (叶儿粑): Glutinous rice cakes filled with minced pork or sweet red bean. Steamed in leaves. Best from street vendors near the bus station. 2 RMB each.
- Mountain mushroom soup: Fresh wild mushrooms (in season) in a clear broth. Light and delicious. Available at many restaurants at the base.
One thing that surprised me: most restaurants near the mountain accept WeChat Pay but not international cards. Always carry some cash (100-200 RMB) for small vendors.
