I've been leading tours up Laoshan for over a decade, and I still love it. This isn't just another mountain – it's a Taoist holy site, a national park, and a place where you can escape Qingdao's summer humidity in minutes. But if you go in blind, you'll waste time, money, and energy. Let me fix that.
What to Expect: More Than Just a Mountain
Laoshan Scenic Area covers about 446 square kilometers. Yes, it's huge. The highest peak, Jufeng, stands at 1,132 meters. But you don't have to summit to have a great day. The area is split into several scenic zones: Jufeng (the classic summit hike), Taiping Palace area, Beijiushui (a waterfall-filled valley), and the coastal trails near Yangkou. Most first-timers pick one zone per day.
You'll find Taoist temples scattered throughout – some are active, some are ruins. The vibe is peaceful, with incense smoke mixing with sea breeze. Spring and autumn are stunning, but even in summer the forests stay cool.
How to Get to Laoshan from Qingdao
The mountain is about 40 km east of Qingdao city center. Public transport is easy if you know the moves.
- By Metro + Bus: Take Line 11 to the final stop, Miaoling Road. Exit from Gate C. You'll see a bus stop for routes 104, 304, or 802. Any of them will drop you at Laoshan Grand Hotel stop – that's the main entrance for Jufeng. Total time: about 1.5 hours from the city center. Cost: metro ~7 CNY, bus ~2 CNY.
- By Taxi/Didi: From May Fourth Square area, it's about 80-100 CNY (45 minutes without traffic). Tip: show the driver '崂山风景区巨峰入口' or just the name in Chinese.
- Private Tour: If you're with a group, Qingdao-based tour agencies run day trips including transport and guide for around 300 CNY per person. I've used Qingdao China Travel Service – reliable but negotiate the price.

Best Time to Visit – Avoid the Crowds & Heat
Most tourists go between May and October. But here's the truth: late April to early June, and September to early November give you the best weather with half the crowds. July and August are hot, humid, and packed with Chinese domestic tourists. If you must go in summer, start at 7 AM – by 10 AM the queues at the ticket booth are insane.
Winter (December-February) is cold (0-5°C) but magical if it snows. Many trails close after heavy snow, but Jufeng remains open. Just bring spikes for your shoes.

Top Hiking Trails for Every Fitness Level
Jufeng Summit – The Classic (Hard)
Distance: 8 km round trip from the cable car top station. Elevation gain: 800 meters. Time: 3-4 hours up, 2 hours down. Trail is mostly stone steps. Steep sections near the top have railings. It's not technical, but your legs will feel it tomorrow. I always tell my groups: bring at least 1.5L water per person, and a snack. There are vendors but prices double near the summit.
Beijiushui Valley – Easy & Scenic (Easy)
Distance: 4 km out and back. Almost flat, with wooden boardwalks alongside streams and small waterfalls. Perfect for families or if you want a relaxed day. Takes 2 hours including photo stops. You can combine with a visit to the nearby Taiqing Palace (a short bus ride).
Yangkou Coastal Walk – Moderate
Distance: 6 km along the cliffside. Some stairs but mostly gentle. You'll see fishing boats, sea caves, and the famous 'Turtle Rock'. Best done in late afternoon for golden light. I usually finish at the beach near Yangkou village and grab a cold beer.
Must-See Spots: Temples, Waterfalls & Secret Viewpoints
Taiqing Palace – The oldest Taoist temple on the mountain, dating from the Han Dynasty. Look for the ancient cypress trees and the statue of Laozi. Entry is included in the Beijiushui ticket. Give it at least 1 hour.
The Secret Sunrise Platform – Most tourists watch the sunrise from Jufeng top, but I prefer a spot near the Yangkou entrance called 'Wangri Peak'. Fewer people, and you can see the sea. Take the small path off the main trail after the first rest pavilion.
Longtan Waterfall – In Beijiushui, after a 20-minute walk from the entrance. In summer the pool is perfect for a quick foot soak. Not deep enough to swim, but refreshing.
Where to Eat: Fuel Your Hike Right
Inside the scenic area you'll find simple noodle shops and vendors selling corn, sausages, and drinks. Prices are reasonable – noodles ~15 CNY, water ~5 CNY. But the best food is outside the west gate, at the village of Yangkou. Try Haichao Seafood Restaurant – address: Yangkou Village, near the bus stop. Google Maps rating 4.3. They serve clams in beer sauce (my favorite) and grilled squid. A meal for two costs about 100-150 CNY. Open 11 AM – 9 PM. Cash or WeChat accepted.
