Most first timers make one critical mistake: they try to cram both Wuzhen and Xitang into a single day. Don’t. The real Jiaxing experience is calmer, more authentic, and way less stressful. Here’s the plan: start at South Lake by 8am, wander through Moon River after lunch, and be back in Shanghai or Hangzhou by dinner. Ready? Let’s go.

Opening hours: 8:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30). I always arrive by 8am to beat the tour groups.
Tickets: Entrance to the lake area is free, but the boat ride to the central island costs 60 RMB (adults). Seniors 60+ and children under 1.2m get half price. You must book ahead — use the official WeChat mini-program (search "南湖旅游区") or book via Trip.com using your passport number. Walk-up tickets are rarely available during peak season.
What to See
The iconic Red Boat (南湖红船) — a replica of the boat where the first CPC congress concluded. It’s small but historically significant. Then climb the Yanyu Tower for a panoramic view of the lake. The entire loop (including the boat ride) takes about 2–2.5 hours.
My insider advice: The best photo spot is not from the dock — walk 50 meters to the west side of the island, where the willow trees frame the tower perfectly. And watch your step near the water edge; it gets slippery after rain.
Lunch: Jiaxing Zongzi & Local Eats
You can’t leave Jiaxing without tasting its famous zongzi (sticky rice dumplings). The best spot? Wufangzhai (五芳斋) at 110 Zhongshan East Road. It’s the local chain that’s been around since 1921.
What to order: Their classic pork zongzi (16 RMB) — the rice is tender, the pork belly melts in your mouth. If you’re vegetarian, try the red bean paste version (10 RMB). Payment: Only Alipay/WeChat Pay accepted. No credit cards. But they do have picture menus, so pointing works.
Other quick bites: Stinky tofu from street vendors (a personal guilty pleasure) and sweet fermented rice soup (jiuniang) — both around 10–15 RMB.
Afternoon: Moon River Historical Street (月河历史街区)

Getting there from Wufangzhai: It’s a 15-minute walk or a quick 10 RMB Didi ride. I’d walk — the route goes along the canal and feels like a mini water-town tour itself.
Moon River is a restored ancient street with canals, old stone bridges, and lots of shops. It’s less touristy than Xitang, which I love. Allocate 2–3 hours to explore.
Must-do:
- Visit the Local Culture Museum (free, 9am–4pm) — small but gives nice context on Jiaxing’s silk and paper-making history.
- Walk over the Three Bridges — each has a different carving style. The middle one offers the best view for photos.
- Drop by the Cat Cafe at No. 78 if you need a break — English menu available, and the cats are friendly.
By 4:30pm, you’ll have seen the highlights. You can either return to the Jiaxing South Railway Station (25 min Didi, about 35 RMB) or, if you’re up for it, head to the Xitang Water Town for the evening (40 min taxi, about 120 RMB). But honestly, for a relaxed day, I’d call it here.
Evening: Return or Extend
Jiaxing South Railway Station has frequent high-speed trains to Shanghai Hongqiao (30 min, 55 RMB) and Hangzhou East (25 min, 35 RMB) until 9pm. Buy your return ticket on Trip.com or at the station — passport required.
Payment reminder: At the station, most shops only accept mobile payment. Carry at least 100 RMB in cash for emergencies (like topping up a transport card).
If you stay for dinner, I recommend Jiaxing Ribs Noodles (嘉兴排骨面) at A Niang Noodle on Yuehe Street — a huge bowl for 25 RMB, open until 8pm. Cash only here, so be prepared.
