Jiaxing

I can't praise Jiaxing enough. As a solo traveler, I felt at ease from the moment I arrived. The hostel staff gave me a hand-drawn map of hidden spots, including a tiny tofu shop that served the best breakfast I had all trip. I took a boat ride at Xitang in the evening - honestly, the reflection of the lanterns on the water was like something out of a dream. Clean streets, polite drivers, and no crazy crowds. It moved me in a way the bigger cities didn't. Book the train ticket now.

You know those places that feel like real life and not a theme park? Jiaxing is one of them. I rented a bike and just rode. Past the canal, through narrow alleys, down to South Lake. Old men playing chess, women hanging laundry, a tiny bakery selling hot sweet buns for almost nothing. The night atmosphere by the water was calm and beautiful. Everything was easy, safe, and genuinely friendly. I've told all my friends this is the weekend trip from Shanghai they should actually take.

Jiaxing completely surprised me. I came expecting a forgettable stopover and instead found one of my favorite water-towns in the Yangtze Delta. The area around the Grand Canal, especially near the old docks at dusk, is pure magic. I must have taken two hundred photos of the red lanterns and stone bridges. The small Zongzi Museum is quirky and worth a visit, and every local I met was incredibly patient with my terrible Chinese. If you love slower, more authentic travel, put Jiaxing on your list. I've already planned a return trip.

Spent a lovely overnight stop in Jiaxing on the way to Hangzhou. The high-speed rail from Shanghai takes barely an hour, and the lake district is an easy walk from the station. South Lake itself was beautiful at sunset, with the reflection of the pagoda in the water. The restored old town is very clean, almost a little too perfect, and some signs were only in Chinese, so I missed part of the history. Still, I found a cute tea house on the canal and sat there for an hour watching the boats. Solid 4 stars for a one-day visit.

I really wanted to like Jiaxing, but after visiting during the golden week I came away a bit flat. South Lake is nice, don't get me wrong, but the queue for the boat ate up two hours and the whole area felt overrun. The old streets around Yuehe have character, but a lot of them were hidden behind scaffolding. I did have a very tasty bowl of noodles from a small stall, and the locals were helpful when I got lost. It's not a bad city, just not the peaceful experience I expected.

We visited Jiaxing with our two kids and had a wonderful time. The water town was beautiful without the overwhelming crowds of the bigger tourist traps. We took a slow boat ride, tried the local zongzi, and watched the sunset from Wenxing Bridge. The pace is relaxed, the food is great, and the people were so kind to us. A perfect family escape.
