Quick Navigation
You've seen the photos — those jagged white peaks piercing a deep blue sky. Now you want to stand on that frozen plateau. But first, you have to get there. And trust me, half the battle is the journey.
I've been leading groups to Dagu Glacier for over five years, and every time I see the same confusion: people show up in Chengdu thinking they can just hop on a direct bus. Nope. It's not that simple. But once you know the ropes, the trip is totally manageable — and absolutely worth it.
Here's the thing: Dagu Glacier National Park sits in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture at an altitude of over 4,800 meters. The nearest town is Heishui County. The park entrance is about 8 km from Heishui town. Most travelers base themselves in Heishui and then take the internal shuttle to the glacier itself.
Let me break down your transport options so you can pick what fits your style and budget.
Overview of Getting to Dagu Glacier
There are four main ways to reach the park: public bus, self-drive, tour bus, or private transfer. None of them are instant, but with the right planning, you can save hours and avoid common pitfalls like getting stuck at the wrong terminal. I'll give you the raw details — plus the little hacks I've picked up over the years.
| Method | Time from Chengdu | Cost (one-way per person) | Best for | Key drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Public Bus | 6–8 hours (to Heishui) | ~150–200 CNY | Budget travelers | Only runs in the morning; need to switch in Maoxian or directly? Actually, direct bus from Chengdu to Heishui exists but limited. |
| Self-Drive | 5–7 hours (330 km) | Gas + toll ~300–400 CNY | Groups or families | Twisty mountain roads; requires experience. |
| Tour Bus | 2–3 days package | 500–800 CNY (all-in) | First-timers | Fixed itinerary, less flexibility. |
| Private Transfer | 5–6 hours | 800–1200 CNY (car up to 4) | Small groups wanting comfort | Pricey; need to book in advance. |
By Public Bus: The Budget Option
If you're traveling alone or on a tight budget, public bus is your friend. But you have to get the details right, or you'll waste a day.
Step-by-Step from Chengdu
1. Chengdu to Heishui: The direct bus leaves from Chadianzi Bus Station (Tea Store Bus Station) at 7:20 AM daily. It takes about 7–8 hours with a lunch stop. The bus is comfortable with AC and a toilet on board, but the road is winding — take motion sickness pills if you're prone. The fare is around 170 CNY.
2. Heishui to Park Entrance: Once in Heishui, you're still 8 km from the park gate. Taxis are easy to find; they charge a flat 30 CNY. Or if you arrive early enough (before 4 PM), ask your hotel to arrange a free pickup — some guesthouses offer this.
3. Park Entrance to Glacier: This part is covered by the internal shuttle (see below).
If you miss the morning bus, your only backup is taking a bus from Chengdu to Maoxian (several departures throughout the day) and then transferring to a local bus to Heishui. That adds 2–3 hours. Honestly, it's a pain. I always tell my clients: ride the early bird.
By Self-Drive: Freedom with Caveats
Self-driving gives you the most flexibility — you can stop at viewpoints, linger at the park, and leave when you feel like it. But the road to Heishui is no joke.
Route & Conditions
From Chengdu, take the G4217 expressway to Maoxian (about 3 hours). Then switch to the S302 provincial road that winds through mountains to Heishui. The last 50 km are especially narrow, with sharp curves and potential landslides after rain. A 4WD is not necessary if you stick to paved roads, but I recommend a car with good ground clearance — sedans will scrape bottom on rough patches.
Drive time: about 5.5 hours without counting stops. Toll cost around 120 CNY one-way.
Parking at Dagu Glacier
There's a large parking lot at the park entrance (near the ticket office). It costs 20 CNY per day. In July–August peak, it fills up by 10 AM, so arrive early. I've seen people forced to park on the roadside, which is risky — local police sometimes ticket. Better to get there by 8:30 AM.
By Tour Bus: Stress-Free but Limited
If you don't want to worry about logistics, a package tour from Chengdu is the easiest. Many travel agencies offer 2-day trips that include transport, accommodation, park entry, and shuttle. Prices range from 500 to 800 CNY per person. The bus picks you up around 6 AM in Chengdu and brings you back the next evening.
Downsides? You'll have only about 3–4 hours at the glacier itself — which is enough, but you can't linger for sunset. And you'll be stuck with a group that may move at a different pace. But for a first visit, it's hassle-free.
I personally avoid these tours because they often stop at souvenir shops. But if you're short on time, they work.
Internal Shuttle: The Only Way Inside
Here's a crucial detail: private cars are not allowed beyond the park gate. To reach the actual glacier viewpoint, you must take the internal shuttle bus — and it's an experience in itself.
The shuttle leaves from the park entrance every 15–20 minutes. It climbs 20 km through hairpin turns, gaining over 1,500 meters of elevation in about 40 minutes. The last shuttle down from the glacier leaves at 5:30 PM (check at ticket office for exact time). Ticket price: 70 CNY round-trip (included in most package tours).
You'll get off at a small station, then walk about 15 minutes on a boardwalk to the glacier overlook. At 4,800 meters, walking feels like a marathon — take your time and carry oxygen (sold at the station).
Parking at Dagu Glacier
Already covered above briefly, but let me add specific tips for drivers:
- Parking lot is open 7 AM to 6 PM.
- Overnight parking is not allowed inside the lot (you can park at your hotel in Heishui for free).
- In winter (Nov–Mar), the road from the park gate to the parking lot may be icy — chains might be required. Rent them in Heishui for about 50 CNY.
