Location & Overview
Hainan Tropical Wildlife Park (海南热带野生动植物园) is located about 30 kilometers southwest of Haikou city, near Dongshan Town. It's a combination of a safari drive-through area and a walking zoo, home to giant pandas, giraffes, lions, and tropical flora. The park opens daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM (last entry at 5:00 PM).

How to Get There by Bus
Public buses are the cheapest option, but they can be confusing for first-timers. Here's the breakdown:
Tourist Line 2 (旅游2号线)
This is the most direct bus. It departs from Haikou Bus Station (海口汽车客运总站) and from the Xiaoying Bus Stop (小英站) near the city center. The bus runs every 30 minutes from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. The ride takes about 70 minutes, and the fare is around 10 yuan. Get off at the 'Wildlife Park' stop (动物园站) – you can't miss it, the bus announces the stop in Chinese.
Regular Bus Routes
Alternatively, take regular bus 59 (from city center) to Dongshan Town and then a local minibus or taxi for the last 4 km. Not recommended unless you're adventurous – I've seen tourists get lost.
How to Get There by Taxi or Ride-Hailing
For convenience, a Didi (China's Uber) is your best bet. From Haikou's downtown, the trip costs about 120-150 yuan and takes 40-60 minutes depending on traffic. Make sure you have the app set up with an international card – it works now for most tourists. Alternatively, flag down a regular taxi; they charge the meter (around 2 yuan per km). Show the Chinese address above to the driver.
Self-Driving Directions
If you're renting a car, use the G98 Ring Expressway and take the Dongshan exit. Signs in Chinese lead to the park. Parking costs 10 yuan per car. Avoid navigation apps that are not local – stick to AutoNavi (Gaode) or Baidu Maps. Google Maps will show you rice fields.
Tips for Foreign Visitors
- Payment: Most tickets and on-site purchases accept Alipay and WeChat Pay. International credit cards are rarely accepted directly, but you can link them to Alipay. Carry some cash (50-100 yuan) just in case.
- Booking: You can buy tickets at the gate (around 140 yuan for adults), but I strongly recommend booking ahead on Trip.com or Klook to avoid queues. You'll need your passport number for entry.

- What to bring: Snacks (food inside is overpriced and mediocre), water, sun protection, and mosquito repellent.
Best Time to Visit & Insider Advice
I always tell my clients to arrive by 9:00 AM. The animals are most active in the morning, and the crowds stay away until after 11 AM. Plus, the light is better for photos. Afternoon? You'll fight selfie sticks.
Another tip: the walking zoo section near the pandas gets jammed around noon. Go there first, then take the drive-through safari later. The drive-through is done in your own vehicle (or the park shuttle), and you can feed giraffes from the car window – that's the highlight.
