Haikou and Sanya itinerary: Split your time like a pro

First thing: Book internal flights early. That 90-minute hop beats a 3-hour drive any day, especially when the highway gets clogged with coconut trucks. I've seen too many tourists burn a full afternoon on the bus—don't be that person.

Now, let me save you some money. Both cities have mandatory digital payments. Alipay (with your international card) works 90% of places, but carry 200–300 RMB cash for street food. And forget Google Maps—it's useless. Use Apple Maps or ask your hotel to write addresses in Chinese for DiDi drivers. Speaking of DiDi, download it before you land; it's the only sane way to get around.

Here is the catch: Most Western guides recommend 3 days in Sanya, 1 day in Haikou. That's backwards. Haikou's old town and food scene need at least 2 days. Sanya's beaches? One day is enough unless you're dead set on sunbathing.

Why splitting matters

Haikou is gritty, cultural, and cheap. Think Qilou Old Street, steam rising from noodle stalls, and temples tucked between high-rises. Sanya is polished, resort-heavy, and expensive. Yalong Bay screams packaged luxury. Most tourists skip Haikou—bad move. You miss the real Hainan.

But the two are 300 km apart. You can't do both well without a plan. I always tell my clients: if you want a relaxed beach vacation, just go to Sanya. If you want cultural immersion, stay in Haikou. If you're like me and want both, here's how.

Getting between the two

Day 3: Transfer to Sanya

Take the 10:30 AM high-speed train from Haikou East to Sanya Station. Arrive 12:30 PM. Check into Sanya Resort in Yalong Bay (around 800 CNY/night; English front desk). Afternoon: Yalong Bay Beach—free, but umbrellas cost 50 CNY. Pro tip: walk left from the main entrance for quieter spots. Dinner at Dongjiao Seafood Plaza—pricy but reliable. Day 4: Sanya – Beyond the resorts
