Why You Must Go Early
The ferry departs from Houhai Pier (后海码头) starting at 8:00 AM. I always tell my clients: aim for the 8:00 or 8:30 boat. Why? By 10:00 AM, tour groups invade. Getting There: Ferry & Transport
Wuzhizhou Island is about 40 minutes east of Sanya city center, near Haitang Bay. The official ticket includes round-trip ferry + island entrance. That's all you really need. The “value-added” combo tickets (with lunch, snorkeling gear, etc.) are often overpriced and lock you into mediocre services.

Sample One-Day Itinerary
7:00 – 7:30 — Leave Sanya. Grab a quick breakfast at your hotel (most start at 6:30). Pack a small towel, sunscreen (reef-safe!), swimsuit, and water shoes. The island has changing rooms but they're basic.
8:00 – 8:30 — Arrive at Houhai Pier. Show your phone with the ticket QR code. Join the ferry queue. (Pro tip: stand on the right side of the boarding line — you'll get a spot near the exit and disembark faster.)

12:30 – 14:00 — Rest or swim. The sun is brutal at this hour. I usually find a shaded deck chair near the main beach. Or go back into the water — but use reef-safe sunscreen only; the park officials check and may confiscate non-reef-safe bottles.
14:00 – 15:30 — Take the electric sightseeing car (80 RMB) if you're tired. It loops the entire island with 6 stops. Or just hike the middle trail to the highest viewpoint — it's a 15-minute uphill walk, worth it for the panorama.
15:30 – 16:30 — Start heading back. Buy any souvenirs (overpriced, but I like the coconut candy). Join the ferry queue. The line at 16:00 can be 20-30 minutes, so don't dawdle.
Snorkeling Spots Worth Your Time
Most people snorkel at the designated area near the pier — terrible choice. Murky water and dozens of flailing legs. Instead:
- Coral Beach (East) — My top pick. Clear water, sandy entry, live coral at 3-5 meters. Bring your own mask.
- Lover's Bay (south side) — Rocky entry but more fish. Only accessible by the sightseeing car or a 20-minute walk from the main beach. Go at low tide.
Money & Payment Tips
I always tell my clients: Don't rely on credit cards. The island has ATMs but they're often empty. Bring at least 300 RMB in cash for snacks, water (8 RMB a bottle), and small vendors. For the ferry ticket and any big purchases, Alipay is the safest bet. If you haven't set it up, do it before you leave home. It works with most international Visa/Mastercard.
