I wanted to like Tianyi Pavilion more than I actually did. The grounds are pretty, but the main library hall is closed off and you really just view it from outside. The books are hidden away in glass cases and most labels are in Chinese, so I felt like I missed the real story. Maybe go with a guide or do the tour, otherwise you leave a bit underwhelmed. Also felt a little small for the ticket price.
Nice place overall. The garden and open courtyards are lovely, and the history of the library is pretty amazing. I just wish there were more English translations for the ancient books and manuscripts; a lot of the detailed descriptions were only in Chinese. Still, a pleasant way to spend a few hours, and the pond with the historic building is beautiful. 4/5.
Tianyi Pavilion Museum is a hidden gem. The mix of ancient book collection, traditional pavilions and bamboo gardens is unique. It's a little maze-like, but that's part of the charm. I went on a weekday morning and nearly had the place to myself. The stone inscriptions and calligraphy with English labels were great. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Chinese history.
As a library nerd, this was a dream. Seeing one of China's oldest private libraries in person is humbling. The exhibition about the Fan family and their book collection was fascinating. I loved the little details, like the design of the water stone paths meant to keep books safe. Bring mosquito repellent if you visit the garden in summer, but otherwise perfect.
Absolutely loved my afternoon at Tianyi Pavilion. The old library's architecture is stunning, and the gardens are so peaceful after the bustle of Ningbo. I couldn't get over the carved wooden doors and the scent of old books in the air. The stone pavilion by the pond is the perfect photo spot. Definitely worth the entrance fee.
