Luoyang

Luoyang has a lot to offer, but I found the experience a bit mixed. The Longmen Grottoes are undoubtedly spectacular—the sheer scale and artistry blew me away. I also enjoyed the Luoyang Museum, which is free and has excellent exhibits on the Sui and Tang dynasties. However, the city's air quality during my visit (late autumn) was poor, with a hazy sky that dimmed the views. Some of the 'authentic' restaurants near the attractions felt overpriced and touristy. After a great first day, I felt a little disappointed by the second. Still a good trip, but could be better.

Luoyang is a fascinating blend of ancient and modern. The Longmen Grottoes alone are worth the trip—I could have spent days just staring at the intricate carvings. The White Horse Temple offered a serene contrast, with beautiful gardens and ancient pagodas. I also took a day trip to the nearby Shaolin Temple (about an hour away), which was incredible. Food-wise, I loved the local beef soup and the crispy flatbreads. The only downside was that some museums closed early, so plan ahead. Highly recommended for history buffs!

I visited Luoyang specifically for the peonies, and it did not disappoint! The national peony garden in early May was breathtaking—rows of flowers in every shade from pale pink to deep magenta, and the fragrance was intoxicating. Beyond the flowers, the Longmen Grottoes are world-class, though I recommend going early to avoid the crowds. The city itself is very walkable, and the metro is easy to navigate. I stayed near the old town and loved the night market vibe. One thing: English signage could be better at some smaller attractions. Still, a fantastic trip overall.

Honestly, Luoyang didn't fully impress me. The Longmen Grottoes are incredible—no doubt—but the rest of the city felt a bit underwhelming. The old town area is quite touristy and crowded, and some streets were noisy with scooters zipping by. I tried the famous Luoyang Water Banquet, but it was more of a spectacle than a meal; the flavors were bland and the portions small for the price. The White Horse Temple was peaceful, but parts were under renovation. For a city with such a rich history, I expected more polish. Decent, but not amazing.

Luoyang is an absolute gem! The Longmen Grottoes left me speechless—thousands of Buddha statues carved into the cliffs, each one telling a story. I spent an entire morning there and still felt I missed half of it. The peony garden in April was a dream, with blooms so vibrant they seemed to glow. The local noodles (I tried the Luoyang Water Banquet) were surprisingly delicious, though a bit heavy for my taste. Every local I met was warm and eager to share history. If you love ancient culture, this city is a must-visit. Five stars without hesitation!

As a history teacher, Luoyang was a dream come true. The Luoyang Museum is world-class—so many artifacts from the Sui and Tang dynasties, beautifully displayed. I also did a guided tour of the ancient city wall ruins, and the guide brought the history to life with stories. The local Muslim Quarter has fantastic lamb skewers and pita bread soaked in cumin. I can’t recommend this city enough for anyone who loves deep cultural roots. Absolutely five stars!
