Last summer I led a group of eight tourists from Germany to Heavenly Lake. The first thing they asked? “How do we even get there without a car?” I’d heard that question dozens of times before. Honestly, the answer isn’t as straightforward as you’d hope — especially if you don’t read Chinese or have a local sim card. Let me cut through the noise. I’ve done this trip over 30 times, and I’ll tell you exactly what works and what doesn’t.
Transport Options at a Glance
Here’s a table that summarizes the main ways to get from Urumqi city center to the Heavenly Lake scenic area (about 110 km east). I’ll go into detail after.
| Option | Travel Time | Cost (per person) | Convenience | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private Transfer | 1.5 – 2 hrs | ¥400 – 600 (total for car) | ★★★★★ | Groups of 3-4, families, anyone with luggage |
| Shared Minibus (tour) | 2 – 2.5 hrs | ¥150 – 200 | ★★★★☆ | Solo travelers, couples, budget but want comfort |
| Public Bus + Shuttle | 3 – 4 hrs | ¥50 – 80 | ★★☆☆☆ | Adventurous backpackers, very tight budget |
| Taxi / Didi | 1.5 – 2 hrs | ¥300 – 500 (one-way) | ★★★★☆ | Spur-of-the-moment, no advance booking |
Private Transfer: The Comfort Pick
This is what I recommend for 90% of my clients. You book a car (usually a 5-seat sedan or 7-seat MPV) through platforms like Didi, Klook, or your hotel concierge. The driver will pick you up at your hotel, drop you at the ticket gate, and either wait or return at an agreed time.
Cost: Expect to pay ¥400–600 for a round trip from downtown Urumqi. If you book through a tour agency, they might bundle the entrance ticket and park shuttle, charging ¥800–1000 total per car — still reasonable split among 3 people.
My experience: I always ask the driver to take the expressway (G7) instead of the old highway. It adds a few yuan in tolls but saves at least 20 minutes. Also, many drivers don’t speak English — have your hotel write the destination in Chinese: “天山天池售票处”. Show it to the driver before departing.
How to Book a Private Transfer
- Didi App: Choose “Chartered Car” (包车). You’ll see a fixed price. Pay via Alipay/WeChat — cash rarely works.
- Hotel Concierge: Most 4-star+ hotels in Urumqi can arrange a car. Expect a 10–15% markup but with peace of mind.
- Online Tour Platforms: Trip.com or Klook have “Urumqi to Tianshan Lake Private Transfer” starting at ¥450. They include driver contact and cancellation policy.

Shared Minibus: Budget & Practical
This is the go-to for solo travelers or couples. Many hostels and travel agencies in Urumqi organize daily group trips to Heavenly Lake. The minibus (usually 10–15 seats) leaves around 8 AM and returns by 5 PM.
Cost: ¥150–200 per person, often including the park shuttle but not the entrance ticket (¥95). So total outlay ~¥250–300.
Where to find them: Check out the travel desk at Urumqi Kashgar International Hostel or YHA Urumqi. Also, search on Trip.com for “Tianshan Lake Day Tour”. English-speaking guides are rare in budget minibuses, so download a translation app.
The catch: You’ll be on a fixed schedule. I’ve seen groups rushed through the lake — only 2 hours at the top, which isn’t enough if you want to hike to the waterfall. If you’re a photographer, this might frustrate you. But for a quick glimpse, it’s fine.
Public Bus: The Cheapest (But Tricky)
Yes, there is a public bus from Urumqi’s Nanjiao Bus Station (南郊客运站) that goes to Fukang City, and from there you take a local minibus to the scenic area. I’ve done this exactly once — and only recommend it if you’re on a shoestring budget and have at least half a day to spare.
Steps:
- Take taxi or bus to Nanjiao Bus Station (about ¥20 from city center).
- Buy ticket to Fukang (阜康) — ¥30, 1 hour ride. Buses run every 30 min until 6 PM.
- From Fukang bus station, find a shared minivan to “Tianshan Tianchi” (天山天池). They charge ¥20 per person and leave when full (usually wait 15-20 min).
- The minivan drops you at the ticket gate. Then buy entrance ticket + park shuttle (¥95 + ¥60).
- Return: reverse the process. Last minivan from the scenic area back to Fukang leaves around 6 PM. Don’t miss it!
Total cost: About ¥50–80 per person one way. But it took me 3.5 hours door-to-door. Coming back, I nearly missed the last bus because the line for the park shuttle was huge. Honestly, I’d rather pay the extra ¥100 for a minibus tour.
Ticket Prices & Parking
As of 2024, the official rates (subject to change):
- Entrance ticket: ¥95 for adults; children under 1.2m free; students with ID ¥48.
- Park shuttle bus: ¥60 round trip (mandatory unless you walk 30 km uphill).
- Cable car to Mount Bogda viewpoint: ¥220 round trip (optional, but highly recommended for panoramic views).
You can buy tickets at the gate — but the queue can be 30 minutes on summer weekends. I always pre-book via WeChat mini-program “天山天池” or through Trip.com. Show the QR code on your phone to enter.
Best Time to Go (and When to Avoid)
Heavenly Lake is stunning from June to September. July and August are peak — blue skies, green meadows, and snowcapped peaks. But also crowds and higher prices.
I personally love mid-September — the autumn colors around the lake are incredible, and the crowds thin out. October can be cold (near freezing at the lake), but if you’re lucky with snow, it’s magical.
Avoid Chinese public holidays like National Day (Oct 1-7) and Labor Day (May 1-3). The lake becomes a sea of people. I once waited 1.5 hours just for the shuttle bus.
Common Mistakes & How to Avoid Them
- Not booking the park shuttle online: Many tourists show up and spend 40 minutes in line. Pre-purchase your shuttle ticket via WeChat or Trip.com.
- Relying on taxis for return: There are few taxis waiting at the parking lot after 6 PM. If you didn’t arrange a pickup, you might get stranded. Book a round-trip service.
- Forgetting warm clothes: Even in summer, the lake elevation is 1,900m. A light jacket is essential. I’ve seen shivering tourists buying overpriced fleeces at the souvenir shop.
- Wearing uncomfortable shoes: The walk from the shuttle stop to the lake is 1 km of gentle slope, but if you hike to the waterfall (Ma’anshan), you’ll need proper footwear.

Peng Gao
Did this as a solo trip and loved it. From Urumqi I took the express bus from the international bus station—cost only 60 RMB one way. The road winds through beautiful canyons and you get a real sense of the Tian Shan mountains. Once at the lake, the air is so fresh it feels like a different world. I spent hours just sitting by the water. If you're short on time, skip the cable car and just walk around the boardwalk—it's free and just as gorgeous. Unforgettable experience.
We booked a day tour online (around 250 RMB per person including entrance and bus) and it was super convenient. The guide spoke decent English and gave interesting facts about the lake's legends. The weather was perfect—blue skies and crisp air. We even saw a couple of marmots near the shore. The only downside was the crowds by noon, but we got there early so it was fine. Highly recommend the boat ride for a different perspective.
Absolutely worth every penny! Took the early morning bus from Urumqi's south bus station—arrived just after 9 and had the place almost to myself. The turquoise water against the snow-capped peaks is unreal. The shuttle inside the park is well organized, and the hike to the waterfall is a must. Pack your own snacks because the cafe at the top is expensive, but honestly, who cares when the view is this magical? 10/10 would do again.
Decent trip overall. We hired a private car from Urumqi which cost around 400 RMB but saved us a lot of time compared to the bus. The driver was friendly and knew the shortcut roads. The cable car up to the lake is worth it, though I wish they’d provide better English signage. Also, the food stalls near the entrance were overpriced and average. Still, a good day trip if you plan ahead.
The lake itself is stunning but getting there from Urumqi was a bit of a hassle. I took the bus from the north bus station around 8 AM and it was already packed. The ride took almost two hours with traffic, and the driver made a random stop at a souvenir shop that felt forced. Not a deal breaker, but definitely not the smooth experience I was hoping for. The lake views made up for it a little, but the journey could be smoother.
