What You'll Learn
It's freezing. I mean, bone-chilling, face-numbing cold. But here's the thing — that's exactly why you should visit Heavenly Lake of Tianshan in winter. No crowds, crystal-clear ice, and a fairytale silence you won't find in summer.
I've guided dozens of groups up here in January. Every single time, someone regrets not bringing the right gloves. Or they waste an hour at the wrong ticket counter. Let me save you that pain.
Before we go deep, here's the bottom line: go on a weekday, arrive by 9:30 AM, and book your ticket on WeChat the night before. Everything else is details. Now let's unpack.
Why winter is surprisingly the best season
Most tourists think Heavenly Lake is a summer destination. They're wrong. I've stood on the frozen lake in February with maybe 50 other people — compared to thousands in July. The snow-covered peaks reflect on the ice like a mirror. And the air is so clean it hurts to breathe (in a good way).
Winter also means the cable car to the peak (Mountain Bogda view) runs with almost no queue. In summer you'd wait 90 minutes. In winter? Walk right on.
But — and this is a big but — the cold is no joke. Temperatures from December to February average -15°C to -25°C. Wind at the top can make it feel like -35°C.
Tickets, prices & booking (the WeChat nightmare)
Here's a common headache: international credit cards don't work at the ticket booth. You need cash or WeChat Pay. But first, you must pre-book online. No walk-up tickets sold, even in winter.
The official booking platform is a WeChat mini-program called "天山天池" (search in Chinese). It's entirely in Chinese. Most of my foreign clients get stuck here. My trick: ask your hotel's front desk to book for you. They do it in 2 minutes.

Getting there: transport & timing traps
Heavenly Lake is about 110 km from Urumqi city center. Drive takes roughly 1.5 hours in good conditions — but winter roads can be icy.
Option 1: Didi / private taxi
From Urumqi (say, the Grand Bazaar area), a Didi to the scenic area gate costs about 250–300 RMB. The driver will likely ask for extra to wait. I suggest you book a round-trip with the same driver (negotiate 500–600 RMB total). They'll wait 5 hours for free.
Option 2: Bus from Urumqi
There's no direct public bus. You can take bus 11 from Nanmen to Fukang, then a local minibus. But honestly, it's a hassle. I wouldn't recommend it for first-timers in winter. Too many transfers in the cold.
What to wear: surviving -20°C without regret
I always tell my groups: three layers, no cotton. Cotton gets wet from sweat then freezes — dangerous.
- Base layer: Merino wool or synthetic thermal. Avoid cotton.
- Mid layer: Fleece or thin down jacket.
- Outer layer: Windproof and waterproof ski jacket with hood. The wind at the lake is brutal.
- Pants: Insulated snow pants or fleece-lined leggings + waterproof shell.
- Footwear: Insulated waterproof boots with good tread. Ice can be slippery.
- Accessories: Balaclava or face mask (lungs hurt at -25°C), thick gloves (touchscreen-compatible if you want photos), hand warmers.
Pro tip: Bring two pairs of gloves — a thin liner for using your phone and a thick outer pair. Also, chemical hand warmers (sold at any convenience store in Urumqi) are lifesavers.
Activities on ice: skating, skiing & snow walks
The frozen lake itself is the main attraction. You can walk on it — it's safe (about 1 meter thick). But stick to the marked areas; some spots near the edges have thinner ice due to underground springs.
Ice skating & snow tubing
There's a designated rink near the west shore. Rentals are 50 RMB for skates. Snow tubing (think inflatable ring pulled by a snowmobile) costs 80 RMB for 20 minutes. The staff are local Kazakhs — super friendly but speak limited English.
Cable car to view Bogda Peak
The cable car takes you up to 3,000 meters. From the top, you see the entire lake and the snow-capped Bogda Peak. The ride is about 20 minutes. Bring your camera — but be warned, the wind up there is extreme. I've seen phones freeze and shut down. Keep it warm in an inner pocket.
Where to eat & warm up inside
There's a single restaurant complex near the lake entrance: "Tianshan Food Plaza". It's nothing fancy but it's warm.
I always order the lamb noodle soup (45 RMB) — hearty and helps with the cold. They also have steamed buns and tea. Veggie options are limited. The restaurant accepts WeChat Pay only. No English menu, but point at the pictures on the wall.
For a proper meal, wait until you return to Urumqi. I recommend the "Xinjiang Islamic Restaurant" near the People's Square — they have excellent pilaf and kebab.
Peng Gao
I'm honestly a bit disappointed. We traveled from Urumqi specifically for this, but the weather was foggy and windy most of the day — barely saw the lake or mountains. The article mentions 'crystal clear ice' but the surface was covered in a layer of slush and footprints. Plus, several viewing platforms were closed due to ice. The ticket price felt too high for what we got. Maybe go on a clear day, but our experience was a letdown.
Good overall but a few things to know. The lake itself is stunning — like a massive white mirror surrounded by snowy peaks. However, the 'essential tips' in the article are spot on: you really need microspikes; I saw many people slipping. Also, the queue for the shuttle bus was over 40 minutes, which was frustrating. Once you're up there, it's lovely, but the organization could be better. I'd give it a solid 4 stars.
Incredible views and very well organized for a winter attraction. We arrived at 9am and had the place almost to ourselves. The ice rink on the lake is fun but a bit small. Pro tip: wear waterproof boots because your feet will get wet walking through the snow. The gondola ride up the mountain gives you a panoramic view of the entire Tianshan range — pure magic. Worth every yuan.
Hands down one of the best winter trips I've ever taken. I went early in the morning right after a fresh snowfall — totally worth it to avoid the crowds. The lake was completely frozen and you could walk right on it (carefully!). A local guide told us to bring thermos with hot tea, which saved us. The only downside: the cafeteria food was mediocre and overpriced. But the scenery more than makes up for it. Highly recommend!
Absolutely magical! Visiting Heavenly Lake in winter was like stepping into a snow globe. The frozen lake against the snow-capped peaks is breathtaking. We rented spikes for our shoes right at the entrance — a must for first-timers because the ice trails get really slippery. Bundle up with layers and hand warmers because the wind picks up around noon. The cable car ride up was smooth and offered insane views. Definitely a 10/10 winter wonderland experience!
