Quick Overview
I've been guiding travelers around Chengde for over a decade. Even now, the first time a group steps into the Mountain Resort and sees that lake ringed by pagodas, they usually stop talking and just stare. But here's the thing — most people go at the wrong time, or they miss the really cool spots that aren't on every tourist map. Let me save you the headache.
Chengde is about 230 kilometers northeast of Beijing. It was the summer getaway for Qing emperors, and its UNESCO-listed Mountain Resort is the star. But the city has a handful of other jaw-dropping temples and landscapes. If you only have one day, you can still hit the main three. With two days, you can relax and actually enjoy them.
What Makes Chengde Special?
Think of Chengde as Beijing's cooler, less crowded cousin. The Mountain Resort (Bishu Shanzhuang) is a massive imperial garden that combines lakes, plains, and mountains. Chinese emperors escaped the stifling Beijing summer here. But most travelers don't realize the site is actually a whole complex of palaces, gardens, and lakes surrounded by a 10-kilometer wall. It's huge. You can't see it all in two hours — trust me, I've tried.
Mountain Resort (Bishu Shanzhuang) — The Crown Jewel
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Ticket Price | Adult ¥130 (peak season Apr–Oct), ¥90 (low season Nov–Mar). Student/senior half price (bring ID). |
| Booking | You can buy on-site, but for peak summer weekends I recommend pre-booking on the official WeChat mini-program "避暑山庄" (use your hotel concierge). |
| Opening Hours | 7:00–18:00 (peak), 8:00–17:30 (low). Last entry 1 hour before close. |
| Address | Bishu Shanzhuang Road, Shuangqiao District, Chengde |
| How to Get There | From Chengde Railway Station, take bus 5 or 7 to "Bishu Shanzhuang" stop (about 25 min). Or taxi for around ¥15. |
| Suggested Time | At least 4 hours. If you want to cover the mountain area, add 2 more hours. |
I always tell my groups: don't try to walk every path. Use the shuttle bus (¥40 round trip) to reach the mountain area's observation decks — the view of the whole resort from above is worth it. And pack snacks. The food inside is overpriced and mediocre.
One specific thing to remember: the Wenjin Tower inside the resort has a famous rock formation called the "Lion's Grove." It's easy to miss. Look for the little pond with the shadow of a lion-shaped rock — it's a classic imperial trick of light.
Putuo Zongcheng Temple — The Little Potala
This is Chengde's second biggest draw. Built to resemble the Potala Palace in Lhasa, it's a stunning mix of Tibetan and Han architecture. Most visitors spend 1.5–2 hours here.

|---|---|
| Ticket Price | ¥80 (no seasonal change). Children under 1.2m free. |
| Booking | No advance booking needed except for national holidays. Queues move fast. |
| Opening Hours | 8:00–17:30 daily. Last entry 16:30. |
| Address | Putuo Zongcheng Road, Shuangqiao District |
| Transport | From the Mountain Resort's east gate, walk about 15 minutes east. Taxi from city center ~¥10. |
Watch out for the climb. There are lots of stairs up to the main hall. If you have knee issues, take it slow. I once had a 70-year-old from Texas who insisted on running up — he regretted it for the rest of the trip. The best photo spot is from the top platform looking back at the entrance: do this around 4pm for golden light.
Puning Temple — Home of the World's Largest Wooden Buddha
About 3 km north of Putuo Zongcheng, Puning Temple houses a 22-meter-tall, thousand-armed Guanyin statue carved from a single piece of wood. It's genuinely awe-inspiring.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Ticket Price | ¥50. Student/senior half. |
| Opening Hours | 8:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30). |
| Address | Puning Road, Shuangqiao District |
| Transport | Take bus 6 from city center to "Puning Si" stop. Or taxi from Putuo Zongcheng ~¥12. |
Inside the main hall, don't just look at the Buddha — look up. The ceiling is covered in intricate mandala paintings. And a heads-up: photography is allowed but no flash. Guards will shout if you use flash, and it's awkward.
Lesser-Known Gems Worth Your Time
Xumi Fushou Temple
A smaller but beautiful Tibetan-style temple right next to Putuo Zongcheng. Often overlooked because tourists rush to the bigger one. It's included in the same ticket? Actually, no — separate ticket ¥30, but it's worth 30 minutes if you like quiet courtyards.
Jinshanling Great Wall (Half-Day Trip)
About 80 km from Chengde, this section of the Great Wall is less restored but much less crowded than Badaling. I only recommend it if you have an extra day. The hike from the west gate to the east gate takes about 3 hours. Do it in the morning to avoid afternoon haze.
Practical Tips for Your Trip
Best Time to Visit
May, September, and early October are perfect — mild weather, fewer crowds. July and August are hot and humid, plus the resort gets packed with Chinese tourists on summer break. If you come in winter, expect snow on the ground and very few people, but also many outdoor tea houses closed.
Getting Around Chengde
Public buses are cheap (¥1–2) but routes can be confusing. Didi (Chinese Uber) is your best friend — most rides within the city are under ¥20. Download the Didi app and set up Alipay before you go. Taxis are also fine, but always ask the driver to use the meter.
Where to Eat
- Xinglong Restaurant — famous for lamb hotpot. I always order the "手切羊肉" (hand-sliced lamb). Google Maps rating 4.3. Some English menu. Price per person: ¥80–120.
- Qiaotou Doufu Nao — a breakfast stall near the resort's east gate. Get the tofu pudding with spicy soy sauce. Only cash or WeChat. Line forms from 7am.
Where to Stay
I recommend staying near Bishu Shanzhuang East Gate. Hotels like Jinjiang Inn (¥200–350/night) or Lavande Hotel (¥300–450) are clean and have English-speaking staff at the front desk. For a more local vibe, try Chengde Mountain Resort Boutique Hotel — just steps from the entrance.
