Spent three days in Baoding exploring the ancient lotus pond and Zhili Governor's Mansion. The architecture is beautifully preserved and the lotus blooms in July were stunning — I must have taken a thousand photos. The locals were warm and the street food was incredibly cheap and tasty. A truly underrated destination in Hebei. I left with zero complaints and a full memory card!
Stayed two nights in a traditional courtyard guesthouse in Zhengding County near Shijiazhuang. The old town is charming with ancient pagodas and local food markets, but the signage in English is almost nonexistent. A bit tricky to navigate without a translation app. The people were friendly though, and the lamb skewers were fantastic. Solid trip for culture lovers who don't mind a bit of chaos.
Beidaihe beach in late September is a hidden gem! The water was clean, the air fresh, and the seafood stalls along the shore served the most amazing grilled squid and steamed clams. We rented bikes and rode along the coastal path at sunset — the sky turned pink and gold. Super relaxing getaway without the crazy crowds. Definitely coming back next year!
Went to Chengde Mountain Resort during summer holiday. The imperial gardens are massive and the lake is pretty, but honestly the place felt a bit too crowded and some of the pavilions looked like they needed serious repair. The ticket price was high for what you get. Nice for a one-time visit if you're in the area, but I wouldn't drive hours just for this.
Spent a whole day hiking the wild section of the Great Wall near Gubeikou. The views were absolutely breathtaking—rolling mountains covered in mist, ancient stones underfoot, and barely any tourists. Felt like stepping back in time. The local guide even cooked us a simple lunch of noodles and veggies right on the wall. Unforgettable experience, can't recommend it enough!
Baiyangdian Lake was okay but overhyped. The lotus flowers were nice in July, but the motorboat tour was noisy and felt rushed. Many stalls selling overpriced snacks. The water wasn't as clear as I hoped. Just average, honestly.
