Harbin to Yabuli: the easiest first drive

Yabuli is the ideal shakedown run — roughly 190 km of expressway, taking two and a half to three and a half hours depending on snow clearing.

Head southeast on the expressway toward Mudanjiang and exit for Yabuli. The resort spreads across separate ski zones that are not walkable from one another, so drive to the base of whichever one you booked and confirm parking with your hotel — lots fill before 09:00 on weekends.

Passes vary by zone and by whether you need rentals, so buy through the resort's official mini-program or Trip.com rather than a roadside tout. If you would rather not drive at all, the high-speed train from Harbin to Yabuli West takes about an hour and twenty minutes — book with your passport through China Railway 12306, then grab a local taxi for the last stretch.

Harbin to China Snow Town: gorgeous, and heavily commercialized

Snow Town delivers the postcard — snow-heavy roofs, glowing red lanterns — but it is a purpose-built tourist village, not a quiet mountain hamlet.

It sits in Hailin, under Mudanjiang's administration, about 280 km from Harbin. Plan five to six hours of driving, longer if it is snowing. The final stretch climbs through mountain roads where plowing lags after a storm, so leave before 08:00 and you will arrive in daylight.

My honest read: two nights maximum. Book lodging through an English platform rather than a WeChat contact, because peak-season pricing there is notorious. Entrance tickets run in the low hundreds of RMB and are separate from everything else. Eat before you arrive if you are watching your budget — dinner inside the village is steep for what lands on the plate.

Mohe and Arctic Village: fly there, don't drive

The drive to Mohe is over 1,100 km of very cold highway — fly into Mohe Gulian Airport and rent locally instead.

Winter temperatures here drop past minus 35°C, which is where car batteries, phone batteries, and human patience all fail at once. If you insist on driving, know that diesel vehicles can gel, that many rural gas stations close early, and that some areas near the Russian frontier carry access restrictions for foreign visitors. Check with local public security before heading north.

How Do You Survive Winter Driving in Heilongjiang?

Tires, washer fluid, and the battery trap

Snow tires, a minus-40°C washer fluid, and an indoor parking spot matter more than four-wheel drive.

Four-wheel drive helps you start. It does nothing to help you stop. The single most common failure I see is windshield washer fluid freezing solid, which turns a slushy windshield into an opaque sheet on the expressway. Buy a bottle of winter-rated fluid at any gas station and top it up yourself before leaving Harbin.

Cold kills batteries. If you park outside below minus 20°C, let the engine idle for five to ten minutes before driving and expect a slow, complaining crank. Hotels with heated underground parking are worth the extra 100 RMB.

Black ice, bridges, and the three-second gap

Bridge decks and tunnel exits freeze first and thaw last — treat every one of them as if it is coated in oil.

Black ice is invisible from the driver's seat. You feel it as a sudden lightening of the steering, and the correct response is to lift off the accelerator and make no sudden inputs at all. Braking hard is how guardrails get involved.

Triple your following distance in snow. Local drivers will overtake you aggressively on the expressway — let them. Speed cameras are dense, and the points system applies to your temporary permit too, so a lead foot follows you home.

Almost everything on the road runs on Alipay or WeChat Pay — cash is accepted at gas stations but rarely convenient, and international credit cards are usually refused.

Fuel up before leaving cities. Stations along the Harbin to Yabuli corridor are frequent, but they thin out fast once you head north or into the mountains. Say "92" or "95" clearly, or show the number on your phone. Most stations are full-service, meaning an attendant pumps for you and you pay inside.

Expressway tolls auto-deduct through the car's ETC tag if the rental has one. If it doesn't, keep cash handy — a booth with a human operator takes it, an unmanned lane will not.

Where Do You Pick Up and Drop Off the Car?

Harbin Taiping International Airport (HRB)

The airport is the smoothest pickup if you are heading straight to Yabuli, but counters close early and staff turnover means reservations sometimes vanish.

Major Chinese chains such as CAR Inc and eHi operate desks here, and Trip.com aggregates them with an English booking flow that accepts international cards. Bring a printed copy of your reservation and your permit. If your flight lands after 22:00, call the branch before you fly — several counters shut by then and you will be collecting keys from a parking lot instead.

Harbin West Railway Station and downtown

Downtown pickup suits anyone spending a few days in Harbin first, and it puts you close to Central Street and Saint Sophia Cathedral before you drive anywhere.

Downtown branches cluster around the railway station and the Nangang business district. Evening traffic in Harbin is genuinely awful — a 6 km crawl can eat 40 minutes — so collect your car mid-morning and clear the city before 15:00.

What Are the Biggest Mistakes Foreign Drivers Make?

• Driving on a foreign license. If you crash, your travel insurance will very likely deny the claim, and the rental company will bill you for everything.
• Skipping the no-deductible insurance. The extra 50–100 RMB per day is the cheapest peace of mind on the market. Repairs here are reasonable; a bumper, a headlight, and a week of loss-of-use fees are not.
• Not photographing the car. Walk a full loop with your phone before driving off — every panel, the roof, the wheels, the interior, and the fuel gauge. Send the photos to yourself so they carry a timestamp.
• Underestimating daylight. Sunset arrives around 16:00 in December and January. Plan to be parked before dark.
