• Metro Line 1 to Zhongjie station, then a 10-minute walk west. The palace address is 171 Shenyang Road, Shenhe District.

Days 9 to 11: Dalian

Dalian is where Northeast China thaws, and by day nine your body will thank you for the milder coastal air. Three nights, and treat the last one as a rest day rather than another checklist.

Xinghai Square is free and enormous, and in winter it is almost empty — bring a windproof layer, because the sea breeze here cuts. The Binhai Road coastal drive is the prettiest stretch of road in the region; a taxi for the full loop runs a couple of hundred yuan and is worth it.

Golden Pebble Beach out at Jinshitan is reachable on Metro Line 3 for under CNY 10 and takes about 50 minutes. Laohutan Ocean Park charges roughly CNY 190 to 220 for the full pass. Honestly? I would spend that money on seafood instead.

Which brings us to the one warning I repeat to every group: around Fisherman's Wharf and the Russian Street area, touts quote a price per jin and then weigh a different, heavier fish. And a straight opinion: Russian Style Street takes ten minutes, mostly souvenir stalls. Go if you are passing, do not build an afternoon around it.

Where to Sleep in Each City

In winter, the three things that matter are heating that actually works, a front desk that speaks some English, and a lift. A fourth-floor walk-up with luggage at -20°C is a mistake you only make once.

For Harbin specifically, the Modern Hotel sits directly on Central Street and has been operating since the early 1900s — you are paying for location and history, not for silence, because the pedestrian traffic outside runs late. Budget chains like Hanting and Home Inn cluster around the same area at a third of the price with perfectly good heating. Confirm current rates directly, since winter pricing in Harbin swings hard around the New Year period.
