Budget hostels cluster around Central Street and are perfectly fine if you only need a bed.

Ask three questions before booking anywhere in winter: is the heating central or individually controlled, is there an elevator, and can the front desk help book attractions through Chinese apps. That last one matters more than breakfast. In Snow Town, confirm the guesthouse has a private bathroom, and ask whether they will store your luggage after checkout while you shoot the morning light.

Money, Apps, and Passports: The Boring Stuff That Ruins Trips

Assume your foreign credit card will be useless at most places you actually want to pay, and set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you fly.
