Quick Navigation
Three hours. That’s how long my clients waited at the South Gate last week because they followed a decade-old blog post about the “tourist bus.” Forget the brochures — if you don’t know the exact platform and the right WeChat mini-program trick, you’ll waste half a day. I’ve been guiding travelers through Zhangjiajie for five years, and I’m going to save you that headache.
Here is exactly what you need: the fastest, cheapest, and most reliable ways to cover the roughly 40 km between Zhangjiajie city center (or the airport) and Wulingyuan entrance. Plus honest warnings about payment, scams, and timing.
Why Getting This Right Matters
Wulingyuan is not a single point — it’s a massive area with five different ticket gates. Most foreign travelers aim for the Forest Park entrance (the iconic pillar views) or the Wulingyuan Gate (near the main town with hotels). If you end up at the wrong gate, you’ll spend another hour in a shuttle. Trust me, I’ve seen it happen.
The golden rule: decide which gate you need before you leave Zhangjiajie. For first-time visitors, the Forest Park Gate (also called South Gate) is the classic start. But if your hotel is in Wulingyuan town (where most budget stays are), the Wulingyuan Gate is more convenient.
Bus from Zhangjiajie to Wulingyuan
This is the go-to for budget travelers. The bus station situation can be confusing — let me break it down.
Where to Catch the Bus
From Zhangjiajie city, go to Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station (next to the train station). Look for the bus marked “Wulingyuan” or “Forest Park.” The platform is usually #12, but double-check the digital board — they sometimes change it without notice. The bus runs every 15–20 minutes from 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM (last bus around 6 PM).
Ticket & Cost
Ticket price: about 12–15 RMB (~$2 USD) per person. You can only pay with cash or WeChat Pay — no credit cards. I always tell my clients to carry at least 50 RMB in small bills because vendors rarely have change for 100s. If you don’t have WeChat, just wave cash at the ticket window; they’ll take it.
Route & Duration
The bus drops you at Wulingyuan Bus Station (in Wulingyuan town) or you can ask the driver to stop at the Forest Park Gate. The trip takes about 45–60 minutes depending on traffic. Avoid the 8:00–9:30 AM rush — construction on the main road can double the time.
Taxi & Rideshare Options
If you’re in a group or have luggage, taxis are worth it.
Official Taxi
From Zhangjiajie city center to Wulingyuan Gate: 100–120 RMB (negotiable; start at 80). From the airport: about 120–150 RMB. Make sure the meter is on — if the driver refuses, step out and get another. Tip: write the price on a piece of paper to avoid confusion if language barrier is an issue.
DiDi (Chinese Uber)
This is my personal favorite. Download the DiDi app (you can set it to English). A ride from Zhangjiajie city to Wulingyuan Gate costs around 80–110 RMB — often cheaper than taxi because of promotions. The app shows the fixed price upfront, so no haggling. But you need a Chinese phone number to register. If you don’t have one, ask your hotel staff to book one for you — they’re usually happy to help.
Private Car & Driver (Best for Groups)
If you’re 3 or more people, a private car is surprisingly affordable. Book through your hotel or a reputable agency like Klook or China Highlights. Cost: 150–250 RMB for the one-way trip (up to 4 people). The driver will pick you up at your hotel and drop you at the exact gate you want.
Why consider this? The bus can be cramped with luggage, and taxis sometimes refuse to go all the way to the Forest Park Gate because the road is winding. A private car gives you flexibility — you can stop for photos or grab a meal on the way. Plus, no language stress.
Shuttles Inside Wulingyuan: Don’t Ignore Them
Once you’re inside the scenic area, you’ll rely on free park shuttles to move between attractions. The shuttle system is efficient but has a catch: they only operate on designated routes. From the Forest Park Gate, the shuttle goes to Yaozi Village (for the Bailong Elevator) and Tianzi Mountain. From Wulingyuan Gate, shuttles run to Ten Mile Gallery and Tianzi Mountain.
Shuttles run from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM (shorter in winter). Wait times can be 10–20 minutes during peak hours (10 AM–2 PM). My advice: avoid the shuttle between 11:30 and 1:00 PM when lunch crowds are thick. Instead, walk the scenic corridors — they’re less crowded and more beautiful.
Key Shuttle Transfer Points
| Gate | Main Destinations | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Forest Park Gate | Yaozi Village, Tianzi Mountain | Every 10 min |
| Wulingyuan Gate | Ten Mile Gallery, Tianzi Mountain | Every 15 min |
| Yangjiajie Gate | Yuanjiajie, Tianbo Mansion | Every 20 min |
Pro tip: The shuttle from Yaozi Village to the Bailong Elevator (the glass elevator) gets extremely busy. If you’re claustrophobic, consider walking the 3 km mountain path instead — it takes 40 minutes and offers stunning views most tourists miss.

I walked from my hostel near the Wulingyuan ticket office to the main entrance — only 15 minutes through a lively market street. But for those with heavy packs, the local minibus is cheap and stops everywhere. Best transport decision I made all trip!
The shuttle from the Wulingyuan bus station to the forest park entrance runs frequently and costs just 2 yuan. Clean, air-conditioned, and the driver waited until everyone was seated. Perfect for starting a day of hiking without hassle.
Tried the public bus at the south gate of Wulingyuan. It was overcrowded with tourists and luggage, no AC, and the driver drove like a maniac. Took almost an hour to get back to Zhangjiajie. Would not recommend during peak season.
I hired a private taxi from the airport to my hotel in Wulingyuan for 150 yuan. The driver was friendly and spoke a little English, but the car felt old and the AC barely worked. Still, it got me there quickly on a hot day. Fair for the price.
We took the bus from Zhangjiajie city center to Wulingyuan and it was super easy! Cost only 12 yuan per person and the bus left every 10 minutes. The ride took about 40 minutes with nice views of the mountains. Highly recommend for budget travelers.
