What's Inside
I have been guiding travelers in Zhangjiajie for years. And every week, I see tourists step off the train at Zhangjiajie Railway Station with that lost look – phone in hand, confused about how to reach the city center. Let me save you the headache.
First, the good news: the old Zhangjiajie station is right inside the city proper. I am talking 10–15 minutes on foot to the main downtown area. But you have to know which exit to take. Otherwise, you will waste time and money. Here is the real deal.
Why This Matters More Than You Think
Most online guides tell you to take a taxi. But they forget that over 70% of foreign travelers arrive at the wrong station – they confuse the old station (Zhangjiajie) with the new high-speed rail station (Zhangjiajie West, 30 km away). If you are at the old station, you are lucky. If you are at the West station, this article will save you 80 yuan and an hour of frustration.
Let's break it down by station.
Walking? Yes, You Can (If You Know Where to Go)
The old station's exit faces Guanyin Bridge Road (观音大桥). Walk straight out of the main gate, cross the small square, and you will see a pedestrian bridge. Cross it, walk another 200 meters along Huayuan Road (花园路), and you hit the heart of the city – Jiefang Road (解放路) area. Total distance: about 1.2 km. Time: 12 minutes if you do not stop to buy roasted chestnuts (which you should, by the way – they are amazing).
Heads-up: The pedestrian bridge has stairs. If you have heavy luggage, do not attempt this. There is no elevator. Take a taxi or bus instead.
I always tell my clients: "If your backpack is light and the weather is nice, walking is the best way to get your bearings. You will pass local breakfast stalls, see how the city breathes."
Bus: The Cheap and Reliable Way
If you do not want to walk, bus is your friend. From the station square, look for bus No.1, No.2, No.3, or No.5. They all go to the city center. Cost: 1 yuan (cash or WeChat Pay only). No English signs, but the conductor will shout out stops. Tell the conductor "Shi Zhongxin" (city center) and they will tap you when to get off. The ride takes 5–10 minutes depending on traffic.
Important: Money matters – carry small bills (1, 5, 10 yuan). Most bus conductors do not accept credit cards. And forget about big notes – they will wave you off.
Here is a table for quick reference:
| Bus Route | Direction | Key Stops | Frequency (minutes) |
|---|---|---|---|
| No.1 | Station ↔ South Gate (city center) | Renmin Square, Buxing Street | 5–8 |
| No.2 | Station ↔ East Bus Station | City Government, Wenhua Square | 6–10 |
| No.3 | Station ↔ West Station | Central Hospital, Zhangjiajie Grand Theater | 7–12 |
| No.5 | Station ↔ Zhangjiajie West Station (long ride) | Downtown, Wulingyuan turn-off | 10–15 |
Bus No.5 is for those going to the high-speed rail station – but you probably do not need that now.
Taxi: Fast but Watch Out
Taxis are lined up right outside the station. To city center, the official fare is 5–10 yuan (depending on traffic). But here is where the scams start. I have seen drivers ask for 30, 40, even 50 yuan from clueless tourists.
My rule: Always use the Didu (ride-hailing app) if you have a Chinese SIM card or Wi-Fi. The price is fixed and shown before you confirm. If you must take a street taxi, insist on using the meter. Point to the meter and say "Da biao" (use meter). If the driver refuses, walk away. There will be another one in 30 seconds.
One more thing – taxis in Zhangjiajie rarely accept credit cards. They prefer WeChat or Alipay. Have cash ready (10 and 20 notes). Most drivers will also try to sell you a "day tour" to the national park – just say no unless you want an overpriced mediocre trip.
Special Case: Zhangjiajie West Station (High-Speed Rail)
Many high-speed trains now stop at Zhangjiajie West Station, which is about 30 km southwest of downtown. This station is new, shiny, and far from the city center. Do not confuse it with the old station.
From West Station to city center (old station area):
- Bus: No.4 and No.5 run from West Station to downtown. Fare 2 yuan, time 40–60 minutes. The bus station is right outside the main hall. Look for the blue bus signs.
- Taxi: Fixed price is usually 60–80 yuan (negotiable if you bargain hard). But at night, drivers may quote 100–120 yuan. Use Didu if possible – it will show around 50–70 yuan.
- Shuttle bus to Wulingyuan: If you are heading directly to the national park entrance (Wulingyuan), there is a direct shuttle bus from West Station for 25 yuan. It runs every 30 minutes until 5:30 PM.
Watch out: The West Station bus station is not well-marked in English. Go to the transportation hub on the ground floor, look for a ticket booth with a blue sign saying "Bus to City Center". If you cannot find it, ask a uniformed staff – they speak a little English.
