Dalian surprised me. I’d heard it was a clean port city, but the mix of Russian architecture, modern beaches, and fresh seafood blew me away. After leading dozens of small groups here, I’ve refined a 3-day route that covers the highlights without exhausting you. Let me walk you through it.
Day 1: Xinghai Square, Xinghai Park & Binhai Road
Morning: Xinghai Square
Address: Xinghai Square, Shahekou District
Opening Hours: 24/7 (but best before 10 a.m. or after 5 p.m. to avoid harsh light)
Admission: Free
How to get there: Metro Line 1, Xinghai Square Station, Exit D. Walk 5 minutes east.
Tip: Don’t bother with the giant sculpture – it’s just a photo op. Instead, walk to the seaside promenade and watch locals fly kites. The real charm is the breeze and the view of the cross-sea bridge.
Late Morning: Xinghai Park
Address: 1 Zhongshan Road, Shahekou District (adjacent to the square)
Opening Hours: 7:00 – 22:00
Admission: Free (some paid rides inside)
What to do: Stroll along the beach (pebbles, not sand), rent a paddleboat. I always recommend the “Sea View Observation Tower” – just 10 yuan for a panoramic view. Avoid the amusement rides unless you’re with kids; they’re outdated.
Lunch: Haiwei Fisherman
Address: 118 Binhai West Road, near Xinghai Park
Specialties: Steamed seafood platter (shrimp, crab, clams), seafood dumplings
Average cost: 80–120 yuan per person
My take: Simple, no-frills, but the freshness speaks. I always order the scallops in garlic. They’re open 11:00–21:00. No English menu, but point at the tanks. Cash or WeChat Pay preferred.
Afternoon: Binhai Road (Western Section)
Route: From Xinghai Park, walk or rent a bike east along Binhai Road. The 3-km stretch to Fujiazhuang is the most scenic.
Best time: 2–5 p.m. (sunlight hits the cliffs perfectly)
Tip: Halfway, you’ll see a wooden boardwalk. Take it down to a small pebble beach – almost no tourists. Great for photos.
Alternative: If it rains, skip outdoors and visit the Dalian Modern Museum (free, closed Mondays) near Xinghai Square.
Evening: Dinner in the City Center
Head to Qingniwaqiao. Try Pinhai Lou at 72 Zhongshan Road. They serve excellent sea cucumber and abalone. Average 150 yuan per person. Reservations recommended for weekends.
Day 2: Tiger Beach Ocean Park & Fisherman's Wharf
Morning: Tiger Beach Ocean Park
Address: 3 Yingbin Road, Zhongshan District
Opening Hours: 8:30 – 17:00 (last entry 15:30)
Admission: 220 yuan adults, 110 yuan children (1.2–1.5m). Book on Trip.com or WeChat mini-program to skip the line – saves at least 30 minutes.
How to get there: Bus 2 or 403 from city center, get off at Tiger Beach stop. Taxi costs about 20 yuan from Zhongshan Square.
Must-see shows: Dolphin show at 10:30 and 14:00, sea lion show at 11:30. Arrive 20 minutes early to get front-center seats.
Tip: Avoid the aquarium if you’ve seen better ones; the outdoor polar bear exhibit is unique. And don’t buy the “VIP” photo with dolphins – it’s overpriced.
Lunch: On-site or at Fisherman's Wharf
If you’re hungry inside, grab a quick bite at the food court (noodles, fried rice, 40 yuan). Better option: exit the park and walk 15 minutes to Fisherman's Wharf – a picturesque harbor with European-style buildings. Lao Dongbei Restaurant (老东北) at 8 Gangwan Street serves hearty pork stew and pickled cabbage. Average 70 yuan.
Afternoon: Fisherman's Wharf & Binhai Road (East Section)
After lunch, wander the wharf’s cobblestone lanes. Rent a bike and cycle east along Binhai Road toward Bangchuidao (2 km). The views of the Yellow Sea are stunning. For a short break, stop at the Shijie Gallery – a free art space in a restored Russian villa.
Evening: Russian Street
Around 5 p.m., take a taxi to Russian Street (15 yuan, 10 minutes). Address: 103 Harbin Street, Xigang District. It’s a commercial block with souvenir shops and Russian architecture. I’d say skip the expensive Russian dolls; instead, try the fresh-baked bread from a street vendor. For dinner, Russia 2.0 Restaurant (at the north end) serves decent borscht and beef stroganoff. Average 100 yuan.
Day 3: Jinshitan or Bàngchuí Island – Choose Your Adventure
Option A: Jinshitan National Resort (Golden Pebble Beach)
Address: Jinshitan Street, Jinzhou District
Opening Hours: 8:00 – 17:00
Admission: 160 yuan (includes Golden Pebble Beach, Discoveryland theme park, and geological museum). You can buy just the beach ticket for 40 yuan via WeChat.
How to get there: Take Metro Line 3 from Dalian Railway Station to Jinshitan Station (50 minutes, 6 yuan). Then free shuttle bus to the beach (every 20 minutes).
What to do: Morning at the beach (swim in summer), then visit Discoveryland for rides (if you have kids) or the geological museum for ancient rocks. The highlight is the “Turtle Island” rock formation – walk there at low tide.
Tip: Bring your own food; the beachside restaurants are overpriced and mediocre. Also, the sun is brutal – reapply sunscreen every hour.
Option B: Bàngchuí Island & Haizhiyun Park
Address: Bàngchuí Island, Zhongshan District (actually a peninsula)
Opening Hours: 8:00 – 17:00
Admission: 20 yuan for the island; Haizhiyun Park is free (but was closed for renovation in 2024 – check before going).
How to get there: Bus 712 from city center to “Bàngchuí Island” stop, then walk 400 meters.
Why choose this: Quieter than Jinshitan, with a forested hill and a tiny beach. Great for hiking. The lighthouse offers a panoramic shot. Combine with Haizhiyun Park if open – it has bizarre rock formations called “Sphinx Rock.”
Time needed: 3-4 hours. Afterward, head back to city center for last-minute souvenir shopping at Qingniwaqiao Market.
Where to Stay in Dalian
| Hotel | Area | Price/night (yuan) | Best for | Wi-Fi & English |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dalian Shangri-La | Zhongshan Square | 600–1,200 | Luxury, business | Stable, fluent English staff |
| Dalian Boutique Hotel (Jinjiang Inn) | Xinghai Square | 200–400 | Budget, solo travelers | Free Wi-Fi, basic English at reception |
| Hanting Hotel (Shahekou) | Near university | 150–250 | Backpackers, families | Wi-Fi okay, limited English – use translator app |
My recommendation: For first-timers, stay near Zhongshan Square. It’s central, near subway, and close to many attractions. The Dalian International Hotel (4-star, 450 yuan) is a solid mid-range option with a swimming pool.
Must-Try Local Food
- Seafood Dumplings – Sample at Chuan Ge Yu Shui Jiao (68 Changjiang Road), 60 yuan for a huge platter. Filled with whole shrimp and pork.
- Mengzi – Fried tofu cubes with garlic sauce. Street food, 5 yuan. Look for a vendor with a long queue near Qingniwaqiao.
- Live Sea Urchin – At Dongbei Seafood Market (123 Dongbei Road), you can pick and they’ll steam it for a small fee. About 30 yuan each. Briny and creamy – an acquired taste.
