What a hidden gem! The park is huge, but we only had two hours and still managed to see the highlights thanks to the well-organized walking routes. The volcanic cone we climbed had an amazing breeze at the top, and the surrounding banana and coconut plantations added a tropical touch. The little café near the entrance served surprisingly good coffee – perfect after a sweaty hike. Everything felt authentic and well cared for. Can't recommend enough!

Hands down the best attraction in Hainan if you love the outdoors. The scenery is breathtaking – green hills dotted with volcanic cones, and the views from the highest peak are panoramic. I spent an entire afternoon hiking and didn't want to leave. The entrance fee is super reasonable for what you get. Bring comfortable shoes and a camera – you'll thank me later! 10/10 would come again.

Absolutely stunning! Walking into the main volcanic crater felt like stepping onto another planet. The well-preserved lava tunnels are incredible – you can actually see the flow patterns from thousands of years ago. The park is very well maintained, with clean restrooms and clear paths. Our guide (we hired one on site) explained the volcanic history in perfect English. Highly recommend for anyone curious about geology or just looking for a peaceful, unique landscape.

A solid day trip from Haikou city. The park is huge and you can really feel the ancient volcanic energy. I liked the black lava fields and the lush greenery contrasting with the rocks. The museum part is informative but a bit dated. The staff were friendly, though the shuttle bus took forever to arrive. Worth a visit, especially if you're into nature, but don't expect top-notch facilities.

Honestly, the geology here is fascinating, but the trail markings were pretty confusing. We ended up walking in circles for an hour trying to find the main crater viewpoint. The volcanic rock formations are cool, but the lack of signposts really killed the vibe. Also, the visitor center was out of water bottles. Not terrible, but not amazing either.

Honestly, I was a bit disappointed. The park is quite large and the concept is cool, but the execution feels a little tired. The main crater is impressive from a distance, but once you get up close, there's trash in a few spots and the railings are rusty. Plus, the entrance fee seemed steep for what you get—almost $15 USD. I expected more interactive exhibits or guided tours, but it was mostly just walking on paved paths. If you've seen one volcanic park, you've seen them all. Maybe I came on an off day, but I wouldn't rush to recommend it.

A solid 4-star experience. The geopark is genuinely impressive—the main crater is huge and the surrounding rock formations are fascinating. I liked that they've preserved the natural feel without over-commercializing it. The reason for 4 instead of 5: the signage on some of the side trails is a bit confusing, and I ended up backtracking twice. Also, the restroom facilities near the top could use an upgrade. Still, it's a great place to spend a half-day. Just bring a map or use your phone GPS.

One of the best hiking spots I've been to in China. The volcanic landscape is otherworldly—huge black boulders, ancient lava tunnels, and pockets of green everywhere. I especially enjoyed the trail that goes down into an old volcanic vent; it's a bit steep but totally worth it. The park is clean, well-signposted in both Chinese and English, and the staff were helpful. We went early in the morning and had the place almost to ourselves. The tranquility was incredible. Highly recommended for nature lovers.

We took our two kids here and it was a fantastic family day out. They loved running around the crater rim and pretending they were explorers. There’s a small museum at the entrance that explains the volcanic history in a fun, interactive way—even the little ones stayed engaged. The paths are stroller-friendly for the most part, and there are shaded areas to take breaks. Only wish we had brought more water since it gets hot, but the park’s shop sells cold drinks. Would definitely come back again!

Absolutely blew me away! The volcanic crater is massive and you can really feel the history under your feet. The trail up to the top is well-maintained with plenty of rest stops, and the view from the summit is breathtaking—you can see all the way to the sea on a clear day. The tropical vegetation along the way is lush and adds a nice contrast to the dark lava rocks. I spent a solid three hours exploring every corner. If you're into geology or just want a unique outdoor experience, this is a must-do in Haikou. 10/10 would recommend!

Haikou Volcanic Cluster Global Geopark Travel FAQ

Do any hotels near the geopark accept foreign credit cards?
Only the larger chains (like Marriott) do. Smaller guesthouses and hostels operate on WeChat Pay or Alipay. Bring a card that works with those, or carry cash. Most ATMs near the geopark accept Visa but charge a fee.
How do I book a homestay if I don't speak Chinese?
Use CTrip/Trip.com in English mode. Many listings have “Book Now” in English. Or have a Chinese friend help you message the owner via WeChat. I’ve done it for several guests; it’s not as hard as it sounds.
Are there any accommodation options inside the geopark itself?
No. The park closes at 6 p.m. and doesn’t allow overnight stays. The closest you can get is Shishan Town.
What's the best time of year to visit the geopark and find cheap accommodation?
November to April is the dry season with pleasant temperatures. Accommodation prices are moderate except around Chinese New Year (February). May to October is hotter and more humid, but you’ll find discounts of 20–30%.
Can I visit Haikou Volcanic Cluster Global Geopark in half a day?
Absolutely. I've done it dozens of times. Arrive at 8:30, leave by 12:30, and you'll cover the main crater, lava tube, and museum. Add the ancient village if you skip the museum video. Most visitors spend 3–4 hours on site.
Is the park suitable for elderly or wheelchair users?
Only partially. The museum and first 100 meters of the paved path are accessible. But the Dragon Stairs to the crater and the lava tube have steps and uneven surfaces. I'd recommend a gorpcore walking stick – available at the entrance shop for 20 RMB. Wheelchair users can enjoy the lower loop and museum, but the crater view is out of reach.
Do I need a guide?
Not really. The park is well-signposted in English. But if you want local stories (like which rock formation locals call “Dragon's Back” or where the best lychee trees are), hiring a guide from a platform like TripAdvisor Experiences can add flavor. I'm biased, but I think my self-guided trail plan above plus the Amap app is enough for most.
Are there any hidden fees?
No hidden fees. Parking is 10 RMB per car. Electric cart shuttle inside the park costs 20 RMB per person – it only runs from entrance to the base of the stairs, about 800 meters. I suggest walking; it's a flat, shaded path with interesting rock formations. Save the cart for elderly or tired kids.
Can I go to the crater rim for sunrise or sunset?
Unfortunately, the park opens at 8:00 and closes at 17:30, so sunrise/sunset access is not possible. For sunset views of the volcano from a distance, drive to Shishan Village West Hill (open area, no ticket) – about 2 km from the park entrance. The view is free and stunning.
The entrance fee seems high for what you get – is it actually worth the money?
If you only walk to the crater and back, feel cheated. But if you explore the tunnel and the hidden corners, the value jumps. Compare it to a movie ticket: for 60–80 RMB, you get about 2–3 hours of active exploration. Plus, it’s a UNESCO Global Geopark – you’re paying for preservation, not thrills.
