I visited early in the morning to avoid crowds and it was perfect. The silence of the desert with only the sound of wind and sand is unforgettable. Crescent Lake looks like a mirror reflecting the sky. I spent hours just sitting on the dune and taking it all in. Highly recommend coming at sunrise or sunset.

Hands down one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. The moment I saw the crescent-shaped lake surrounded by towering sand dunes, I felt like I was in another world. We did the sandboarding and it was a blast. The staff were friendly and the facilities were clean. A must-visit in Dunhuang!

Honestly, this place is a bit overhyped. The lake is much smaller than in photos, and the area was packed with tourists taking selfies. Sand got everywhere, and the wind made it hard to enjoy the view. The camel ride was fine but felt rushed. Not awful, but I expected more.

I've always wanted to see Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake, and it did not disappoint. The contrast between the golden dunes and the clear blue water is breathtaking. We hiked to the top of the dune and watched the sun go down—magical. The only downside is the entry fee is a bit steep for what you get, but I'd still recommend it.

The sand dunes are absolutely stunning, and riding the camel at sunset was a dream come true. Crescent Lake is a beautiful oasis in the middle of nowhere. However, the park was super crowded even on a weekday, and the queue for the shuttle bus took forever. Still, totally worth it for the incredible views.

What a gem! We visited in the late afternoon and stayed until the stars came out—totally worth it. The camel drivers were friendly and let us take our time for photos. The contrast between the golden sand and the blue-green lake is surreal. I was worried about the heat but it was actually pleasant with a breeze. Only wish we had more time to hike the dunes further. Definitely one of the top attractions in China, and I would go back in a heartbeat. 5 stars!

There are no words. Watching the sun set behind the dunes while the moon reflected on the crescent lake was a spiritual experience. I climbed to the top of the highest dune—hard work but so rewarding. The silence up there, broken only by the wind, is something I'll never forget. I also tried the sand sledding, which was hilarious. This is an absolute must-do if you're in Dunhuang. Bring a scarf to cover your face and a good camera. 5 stars without a doubt.

We had a wonderful time here—perfect for a family outing. The kids loved sliding down the dunes on those plastic boards, and we all enjoyed just walking barefoot in the warm sand. The lake is stunning, especially with the reeds and the old pagoda in the background. Only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because the facilities (toilets, food stalls) are pretty basic and overpriced. And the wind can be brutal—bring goggles! Still, a memorable experience that I'd recommend.

Honestly, I was a bit let down. The photos make it look like a peaceful oasis, but when we got there it was packed with tourists and selfie sticks. The queue for the camel ride was almost an hour, and the ride itself felt rushed. The lake is pretty but smaller than I expected. The entrance fee is also quite steep for what you get. If you can, go early in the morning to avoid crowds, but overall I think it's overrated. 3 stars from me.

Absolutely magical! We arrived just before sunset and the way the sand dunes changed color from gold to deep orange was breathtaking. The crescent-shaped lake in the middle of all that desert feels like a mirage. We did the camel ride, which was fun but a bit bumpy—still worth it for the views. The sand boarding was a thrill too. Highly recommend bringing water and a mask because the wind can kick up sand. One of the most unique places I've ever visited, definitely a 5 out of 5!

Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake Travel FAQ

I'm traveling solo. Can I buy a ticket at the gate without any Chinese app?
Yes, you can buy at the ticket counter with cash or international credit card (Visa/Mastercard now work at most ticket windows, but not all). The counter is open the same hours as the park. However, expect a 10–20 minute wait in summer.
Is the entry fee per day or per entry? Can I leave and come back?
The ticket is single-entry only. If you leave the park, you must buy a new ticket to re-enter. So plan to stay inside until you're done. Bring snacks and water.
Do I need to print the ticket or show the QR code on my phone?
Show the QR code on your phone is fine at the turnstiles. But if you bought from a third-party, make sure you have a working data connection — the signal inside the park can be weak. I recommend downloading the QR code as an image beforehand.
I'm a student. Will my foreign university ID work for the half-price ticket?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The official rule says "valid student ID" — but Chinese student IDs have a specific format. If your foreign ID is not recognized, you'll have to pay full price. To be safe, bring your international student identity card (ISIC) or a university letter in Chinese. I've seen many foreign students get rejected — it's frustrating.
Is there a combined ticket with the Dunhuang Mogao Caves?
No, there is no combined ticket. They are separate sites with separate entry fees. Mogao Caves (A类 ticket) is 238 RMB and must be booked days in advance. You'll need at least half a day for each.
What should I wear to the sand dunes?
Light, breathable clothing. A hat and sunglasses are essential. I recommend closed-toe sandals or barefoot. Avoid high heels or flip-flops — you'll sink into the sand. Also, bring a scarf or mask to cover your mouth when the wind blows sand.
Can I buy Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake tickets on the same day during Golden Week?
Technically yes, but you’ll face a 2-hour queue at the window if you arrive after 9 AM. I’ve seen tickets sell out by 11 AM during National Holiday (Oct 1-7). Book at least 3 days ahead via the mini-program if you’re going in peak periods.
My international credit card won’t work on the booking site — what now?
Happens all the time. Best workaround: ask your hotel to purchase the ticket for you (give them cash). If you’re staying at a hostel, the front desk usually helps. I recommend the Dunhuang Post Hostel — their staff is used to this request.
Are Mingsha Mountain tickets refundable if it rains?
Yes, but only for online bookings. You can cancel up to 1 hour before the chosen time slot via the mini-program. Full refund minus a small processing fee (about 3 RMB). On-site tickets are non-refundable unless the park closes due to sandstorms — which happens maybe twice a year.
Do I need a separate ticket for the camel ride inside?
Yes, the camel ride is an add-on (100 RMB). You pay inside the scenic area at the camel station. They accept WeChat Pay and cash. No reservation needed — just queue. Note: the camels operate from 7:30 AM to 7:00 PM in summer, but they stop earlier if it’s very windy.
