Three days in Guilin? Perfect. You can absolutely see the postcard highlights without feeling like you're on a military march. I've planned this exact trip for dozens of families and solo travelers over the years. The secret isn't just what you see, but when you see it and how you get there. This itinerary squeezes in the Li River's majesty, Yangshuo's laid-back charm, and the epic Longji Terraces, with all the nitty-gritty on tickets, transport, and those little spots where you can actually breathe without a crowd.

Day 1: Guilin City & The Li River Cruise
Most tours rush you straight to the boat. I say spend the morning in Guilin itself. The city has its own quiet rhythm.
Morning: Elephant Trunk Hill & A Local Breakfast
Start at Elephant Trunk Hill (Xiangbishan). It’s the city's symbol. The park opens at 7:00 AM. Get there for 7:30. You'll have the famous "elephant drinking water" view mostly to yourself before the big tour buses roll in at 9. Ticket is 55 RMB (adult). The park is small; an hour is plenty. Address: 1 Binjiang Road, Xiufeng District.
Afterwards, walk 10 minutes north along the river. You'll pass locals doing tai chi. Look for a small alley with steam rising – that’s where you’ll find a local breakfast stall selling Guilin mífěn (rice noodles). A basic bowl with braised pork is about 6 RMB. Don't look for an English sign; just point at what others are eating. It’s the best breakfast in town.
Afternoon: The Li River Cruise to Yangshuo
This is the main event. The classic cruise departs from Zhujiang Pier (Mopan Mountain Pier), about 40 minutes drive from downtown. You must book tickets in advance, especially in peak season (April-Oct). I always book through the official site or a trusted local agency. The standard 4-star boat ticket is around 210 RMB (it includes the bus from downtown to the pier).
Guide's Secret: Ask for a seat on the upper deck, starboard (right) side when boarding. For 90% of the journey, the best views are on the right. Also, the boat cafeteria food is mediocre and overpriced. Pack some snacks and water from a Guilin supermarket.
The cruise takes about 4 hours. You'll glide past Nine-Horse Fresco Hill and Yellow Cloth Shoal. The famous 20 RMB note view comes about 2 hours in – keep your camera ready on the right side. The boat docks at Yangshuo's Pier around 2-3 PM.
From the pier, it's a 15-minute walk or a quick 10 RMB taxi to Yangshuo's main area, West Street (Xijie). Check into your hotel here. Drop your bags and go explore.
Day 2: Yangshuo’s Countryside – The Real Magic
Yangshuo town is fun, but the magic is outside it. Today is for bikes, rivers, and mountains.
Morning: Electric Bike Adventure
Rent an electric bike (e-bike). This is non-negotiable for the best experience. You'll find rental shops all over West Street. Cost is 40-60 RMB for the day. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Your destination: the Yulong River area.
Here’s my favorite loop: From West Street, head towards the Ten-Mile Gallery road (it's a scenic road, not an art gallery). Pass under the big Gongnong Bridge (Workers-Peasants Bridge) – stop here for a stunning panoramic view of the river and karst peaks. Continue along the small roads following the Yulong River. You'll pass ancient stone bridges and farmers in rice paddies. The road ends near the Jiuxian (Old County) ancient village. Park your bike and walk around. It's quiet and authentic.
Afternoon: Bamboo Rafting & Cooking Class
Head back towards the Yulong River bamboo rafts. The official dock is at Shui'e Di (Watery Moon). A 50-minute raft ride for two people costs about 160 RMB. It's peaceful, much less commercial than the main Li River rafts. The raftsman might even let you dip your feet in the water.
For the late afternoon, I highly recommend a cooking class. It’s a hands-on way to connect with the culture. Yangshuo Cooking School runs great half-day courses. You'll visit a local market, then learn to make dishes like beer fish and stuffed tofu. It’s about 250 RMB per person. You eat your creations for dinner – problem solved.
Day 3: Longji Rice Terraces – A Day Trip to Another World
This is a commitment – about 2.5 hours each way from Yangshuo – but it’s worth it. The terraces are a masterpiece of human engineering.
Getting There & Choosing Your Spot
You have two main options from Yangshuo: a private car (expensive, around 600-800 RMB round trip) or a tourist bus. The bus is the smart choice. Book a seat on a direct "Yangshuo to Longsheng/JinKeng" tourist shuttle. It leaves early, around 7:30 AM, from Yangshuo bus station. The ride is winding – take motion sickness pills if you need them.
There are several terrace areas. For a one-day trip, go to Jinkeng (Golden Summit) Terraces. They have a cable car, which saves your legs for exploring at the top. The main village is Dazhai.
| Item | Details | Cost (Approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Entrance Ticket | Covers all Longji Terrace areas | 80 RMB (Adult) |
| Cable Car (Jinkeng) | Single trip to/from summit | 55 RMB (Single), 100 RMB (Round) |
| Tourist Bus (Yangshuo-Dazhai) | Round trip, 5-6 hours total travel | 150-180 RMB |
| Lunch in Dazhai | Local restaurant, bamboo rice is a must | 40-60 RMB per person |
The Visit & Return
Take the cable car up. The view is staggering. Walk along the paved paths at the top. Visit the Golden Buddha Peak (Jinfo Ding) viewpoint. You can hike down if you're feeling energetic – it takes about 1.5 hours on stone steps. Have lunch in Dazhai village – try the bamboo tube rice cooked over an open fire.
Catch your return bus around 3 PM. You'll be back in Yangshuo by 6 PM, tired but filled with incredible images. Have a relaxed farewell dinner on West Street.
Timing is Everything: The terraces are green and lush from May to September. In late September/October, they turn a golden yellow before harvest – arguably the most photogenic time. From November to April, the fields are filled with water or are bare, which has its own stark beauty but is less colorful.
Where to Stay – A Quick Breakdown
You have a choice: base yourself in Guilin or Yangshuo for all three nights. I strongly recommend Yangshuo. It puts you in the heart of the scenery after Day 1 and saves you backtracking.
For Social Travelers & Nightlife: Stay on or near West Street (Xijie). It's noisy at night but super convenient. Try Yangshuo Mountain Retreat (budget) or Banyan Tree Yangshuo (luxury, not on West Street but close by).
For Peace & Views: Look at guesthouses along the Yulong River, like Ancient Garden Boutique Hotel. You'll need an e-bike or taxi to get to town, but you wake up to rice fields.
For Families: A hotel just outside the West Street chaos is perfect. Green Lotus Hotel Yangshuo has a pool and is a 5-minute walk from the action.
Your Guilin Trip FAQs Answered
This article is based on my personal guiding experience and has been fact-checked for accuracy. Guilin’s landscape hasn't changed in millennia, but the practical details – like pier names and bus schedules – are current. The best piece of advice I can give? Slow down. Don't just tick off the sights. Sit by the river with a beer, watch the cormorant fishermen (yes, it's a bit touristy but still beautiful), and let the landscape sink in. That’s the real Guilin.
