I've led dozens of groups through Urumqi, and here's the thing — most online itineraries leave you exhausted. You book a taxi, get stuck at the wrong entrance, and waste hours. Not on my watch. This 5-day plan is built from real screw-ups and hidden gems. It's designed to save you time, money, and patience.
First, the biggest pain point: international credit cards often fail here. Always carry cash (RMB) and have the WeChat Pay app set up before you arrive. Even at the Grand Bazaar, many stalls are cash-only. I watched a couple from Canada walk away hungry because their card was declined. Don't be them.
Now, the golden rule for Urumqi: avoid noon outdoor activities from June to August. The sun is brutal. Shift your sightseeing to mornings before 11 am and after 4 pm. Trust me, your skin will thank me.
Day 1: Immerse in Urumqi's Ethnic Culture
Morning: Xinjiang Regional Museum
Address: 72 South Xibei Road
Opening hours: 10:00 – 18:00 (last entry 17:00), closed on Mondays (except public holidays)
Ticket: Free, but you must book through the official WeChat mini-program "新疆博物馆" at least one day in advance. I've seen people turned away at the gate.
Transport: Take metro Line 1 to Bayi Museum Station, exit B. Walk 400m east.
Pro tip: The mummies exhibit is the highlight. Get there right at 10 am to avoid tour buses. I always joke that the Loulan beauty has better skin than me.
Afternoon: Grand Bazaar
Address: 49 Jiefang South Road
Hours: 10:00 – 22:00 (shops start closing around 21:30)
Admission: Free to enter the bazaar; the 80-meter tower costs 30 RMB (adult).
Watch out: The main entrance gets ridiculously crowded by 2 pm. Go to the side gate on Tuanjie Road. It's where locals enter.
What to buy: Dried fruits, nuts, embroidered hats. Avoid the “antiques” — most are factory-made replicas.
Food stop: Inside the bazaar, try the lamb skewers (6 RMB each) from stall 27. The guy there uses a secret spice mix. I always buy 10.
Day 2: Journey to the Sky – Tianshan Tianchi Lake
Getting to Heavenly Lake
Distance: 110 km from downtown Urumqi (about 1.5 hours by car)
Bus from city: Take bus route 1 from Nanhu Bus Station to Tianchi Scenic Area (30 RMB, every 30 minutes from 8:00–12:30). Last bus back at 17:00.
Private car: If you're in a group, book through Didi. The cost is around 200 RMB one way. Make sure the driver drops you at the tourist center, not the parking lot 2 km away. I've seen people walk uphill for 20 minutes.
At the Lake
Entrance fee: 95 RMB for the scenic area (peak season) + 60 RMB for the shuttle bus.
Boat ride: 100 RMB per person for a 30-minute loop. Skip it if the weather is hazy — you won't see much.
Hike: The 2-hour trail to the West Mountain Temple offers the best views. Start by 10 am to catch the morning light.
My secret spot: Walk 200 meters past the shuttle bus drop-off point, turn left onto a small dirt path. You'll find a quiet bench overlooking the lake. Perfect for a picnic.
Facilities: There's a restaurant at the visitor center, but it's overpriced (a bowl of noodles costs 45 RMB). Bring your own snacks.
| Item | Price (RMB) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Scenic area entry | 95 (peak) / 45 (off-peak) | Student & senior discounts (bring passport) |
| Shuttle bus (round trip) | 60 | Mandatory unless you hike 7 km uphill |
| Boat ride | 100 | 30 min, departs every 20 min |
| Parking for private car | 10 per hour | Max 30 RMB |
Day 3: Desert and History – Turpan Day Trip
Turpan is 200 km from Urumqi — about 2.5 hours by high-speed train. Book the CXXX train (e.g., C822, departs 8:00) from Urumqi Station. Return with the 18:30 train. Ticket price: 105 RMB one way, second class.
The Flaming Mountains
Address: 25 km east of Turpan city
Ticket: 40 RMB. Honestly, it's a bit of a tourist trap. You can see the red mountains from the road for free. Skip the indoor thermometer exhibition — it's just a giant thermometer.
Time needed: 30 minutes max. Take a photo and move on.
Grape Valley
Address: 10 km northeast of Turpan
Ticket: 60 RMB (includes shuttle)
Best time: August to September for fresh grapes. But if you come in June, you'll see the vines but no fruit.
My tip: Go to the Uyghur family visit at the end of the valley. They'll offer you dried grapes and tea. I always buy a bag of raisins there — they're cheaper than in Urumqi.
Karez Irrigation System
Address: Aiyiding Village (about 5 km from city center)
Ticket: 40 RMB
Why visit: This underground water system is a UNESCO candidate. You can walk inside the tunnel for about 200 meters. It's cool even in summer — a nice break from the heat.
Duration: 1 hour.
Lunch recommendation: In Turpan city, try Xinjiang Grand Bazaar Restaurant. Order the lamb pilaf (35 RMB) and cold cucumber salad. They have picture menus. No card, only cash or WeChat.
Day 4: Local Flavors and Art
Morning: Street Food Tour on Wuxing Road
Start at the intersection of Wuxing Road and Changchuan Road. This is where Urumqi's food scene comes alive.
Must-try:
- Naan bread from stall 3 (2 RMB, fresh out of the tandoor).
- Big plate chicken at Xiaohe Restaurant, Wuxing Road number 128. A medium portion (58 RMB) feeds two. It's spicy, but you can ask for mild.
- Milk tea with butter (5 RMB) at the corner cart. I always order extra butter for richness.
Afternoon: Art at the 7th Street Bazaar
Address: 155 Youhao South Road
Hours: 10:00 – 20:00
What's there: A converted factory with galleries selling Uyghur carpets, hand-painted ceramics, and modern Xinjiang art.
My favorite gallery: Studio 7 – the artist, Ayshan, speaks some English. She'll explain the symbolism in her paintings. A small piece costs around 300-500 RMB.
Time budget: 1.5 hours.
Day 5: Relax and Departure
Morning: Red Hill Park
Address: 189 Hongshan Road
Hours: 6:00 – 22:00 (pagoda gates close at 20:00)
Ticket: Free.
Climb: 10-minute walk to the top for a panoramic view of Urumqi. The pagoda has 2 RMB entry — worth it for the photo.
Best time: 8:00 am to avoid the morning exercisers. I did it at 7:30 and had the top to myself.
Last-Minute Shopping: North Yard Market
Address: 55 North Yard Road
Hours: 8:00 – 20:00
Why go: It's a wholesale market for local products. Dried apricots (35 RMB/kg), Xinjiang dates (20 RMB/kg), and saffron (cheap but quality varies).
Baggage note: I always tell my clients to bring a collapsible duffel bag. You will buy more than you expect.

If you only have 5 days in Urumqi, use this plan. It balances sightseeing with real local experiences — we even joined a small family cooking class mentioned in the tips section. The itinerary allowed us to see the Southern Pastures AND the Tianshan Grand Canyon without feeling overwhelmed. Every detail felt thoughtfully curated. A must-bookmark for any Silk Road traveler.
This itinerary made my trip so smooth! The local tips were gold — like which bus to take to the Heavenly Lake and how to avoid the ticket queues. I especially appreciated the note about bringing snacks for the long drive. The Uyghur food recommendations were all spot-on. Can't thank the writer enough. 5 stars all the way!
Honestly one of the best 5-day plans I've ever used. The mix of markets, ancient ruins, and nature was spot on. We followed the Day 3 Xinjiang Museum + Erdaoqiao market combo and it was perfect — the museum's mummies are a must-see. Also the warning about sun protection at the Salt Lake saved my skin. Absolutely recommend this to anyone visiting Urumqi!
Loved the depth of cultural details — the section on Uyghur traditions and the silk road history was exactly what I was looking for. The suggested halal restaurant near the Grand Bazaar was a gem. Only wish there were more practical transit tips for getting around the outskirts. Still, a reliable guide for first-timers like me.
This itinerary was a solid starting point, but honestly felt a bit rushed for 5 days. Day 2 packed too many sites (Red Hill, Grand Bazaar, and a museum) — we were exhausted and barely had time to enjoy the local tea houses. The tips about bargaining at the bazaar were helpful though. Overall decent, but I'd suggest cutting out one spot and adding more downtime.
