What's Inside
Three hours. That’s how long I watched a family of four wrestle with the airport Wi-Fi, trying to book a taxi—only to realize they had no cash and no Chinese payment app. Don’t be that family. A Guilin layover can be magical: the jagged karst peaks rising out of misty rivers are just 40 minutes away. But the window is tight, and the pitfalls are real. Here is exactly how to skip the queues, handle the payment nightmare, and see the real Guilin in under four hours.
Is It Worth Leaving the Airport?
Short answer: Yes, if you have at least 6 hours between flights (including 1 hour to clear customs and 1 hour to re-enter security). With less than 5 hours, stay put—Guilin’s airport has decent lounges and a couple of overpriced noodle shops. But with 6+ hours, you can taste the famous scenery.
Step-by-Step: Your Layover Plan
1. Arriving at Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL)
First, the basics. The airport is small but modern. Once you exit the arrivals hall, you’ll see a taxi rank and an airport bus stop. Do not change money at the airport—their rates are terrible. You'll need a Chinese phone with data or a WeChat account to pay for almost everything inside the city.
I always tell my clients to download Alipay and link an international credit card before the trip. Most merchants accept it, and it saves you the headache of carrying cash.
2. Getting to the City
| Option | Time | Cost | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport Bus Line 1 | ~50 min | 20 CNY (~$3) | Solo travelers, budget |
| Taxi / Didi (Chinese Uber) | ~40 min | 120-150 CNY ($17-21) | Groups, tight schedule |
| Private car (pre-booked) | ~40 min | 200+ CNY | Peace of mind, late arrivals |
The airport bus drops you off at Guilin Railway Station (South) or Shangri-La Hotel. From there, you can take local buses or Didi to your destination. If you’re short on time, just call a Didi using the app—it’s cheaper than a taxi and no haggling.
3. Where to Go: Best Attractions for a Short Stop
You don’t have time for everything. Pick one or two spots max. Here’s my ranking for layover warriors:
- Elephant Trunk Hill (Xiangbi Shan) – The symbol of Guilin. Entry is 55 CNY (adult). It’s a 30-minute walk around the park, and you can snap the iconic photo from the riverbank. Note: the best angle is from the floating bridge, which is often crowded at noon. Go before 10 am or after 4 pm.
- Lijiang River Cruise (short section) – If you have 3+ hours free, take a 1-hour bamboo raft ride from which is actually a motorized raft. The section from Mopanshan to Xingping is stunning. Cost: around 320 CNY per person. But beware—the booking is a hassle. You need to reserve online via Trip.com or a local travel agent at least one day in advance. No walk-ins.
- Sun and Moon Pagodas (Shuangta) – Free to walk around the lake at night. Good for a quick evening stroll if your layover is after dark.

4. Eating on a Tight Schedule
Skip the airport food. Head to Zhengyang Walking Street in the city center. My go-to is Old Rice Noodles (Laoyou Mifen) at a hole-in-the-wall called “Shijie Mifen”. It’s sour, spicy, and costs 8 CNY. They don’t accept cards, but they have Alipay. If you must use cash, bring small bills.
5. Heading Back to the Airport
Give yourself at least 1.5 hours from the city center to the airport. Traffic in Guilin is unpredictable. If you take a taxi, ask the driver to use the airport expressway (even if it costs an extra 10 CNY toll). The bus also runs every 30 minutes from the same stops. Check the last departure time at the bus station.
What to Avoid During a Guilin Layover
- Don’t buy souvenirs at the scenic spots. They mark up by 300%. If you want the same “Guilin landscape scroll,” buy it at the underground market near the railway station for half the price.
- Don’t trust the friendly touts at the airport exit. They will try to sell you overpriced tours. Just politely say “no thanks” and keep walking.
- Don’t forget the domestic security. When you return to the airport, you need to go through security again. If you’re on a connecting flight, make sure you have enough time (I recommend 60 minutes before boarding).

Where to Stay If You Have an Overnight Layover
If your layover extends overnight, don’t stay near the airport—it’s isolated. Instead, stay in the city center near Lijiang River. Here are three reliable options:
| Hotel | Price Range | Why I Like It |
|---|---|---|
| Guilin Marriott Hotel | 400-800 CNY | Great location, English-speaking staff, gym with river view |
| Shangri-La Guilin (by the river) | 700-1200 CNY | Beautiful gardens, huge rooms, but a bit far from the center (taxi needed) |
| Yangshuo Mountain Nest (if you go to Yangshuo) | 250-500 CNY | Boutique hostel with dorms and private rooms, free bike rental |
For a budget option, try Guilin Backpacker Hostel near the train station—clean, social, and 50 CNY for a dorm bed. But don't expect luxury.
