What You'll Get (No Fluff)
Why Most Xi'an Cultural Itineraries Fail
I've been guiding travelers in Xi'an for eight years. The number one mistake? Following online 'guides' that tell you to start at 8 AM at the Terracotta Warriors. By 10 AM you're trapped behind a wall of selfie sticks, and the heat is unbearable. Here's the truth: the official opening at 8:30 is a lie. The ticket check starts at 8:00, but the actual pits are not accessible until 8:45. And if you don't have a pre-booked ticket, you'll waste an hour at the window. My Xi'an cultural itinerary fixes all that.
Day 1: Terracotta Warriors & Ancient City Wall
Morning: Terracotta Warriors (Arrive by 7:45 AM)
Address: Terracotta Warriors Museum, Lintong District, Xi'an, Shaanxi.
How to get there: Take Metro Line 9 to 'Fangzhicheng' station (Exit A), then hop on bus 306 (direct, 7 RMB) – takes 50 minutes. Alternatively, your hotel can arrange a private car for around 300 RMB round-trip. I always tell my clients: skip the bus tour packages; they lock you into a 3-hour window, which is too long.
Ticket prices:
| Category | Price (CNY) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Adult (peak season Mar-Nov) | 120 | Must reserve via official WeChat mini-program at least 1 day ahead |
| Adult (off-peak Dec-Feb) | 100 | Same reservation needed |
| Child (under 1.2m) | Free | No ticket needed |
| Senior (over 65, Chinese ID) | Free | Passport may not be accepted; better to buy regular ticket |
My insider trick: The WeChat mini-program is fully Chinese. If you can't read it, ask your hotel receptionist to book for you. And don't buy from third-party sites – I've seen guests get scammed with invalid QR codes.
Once inside, head straight to Pit 1, but skip the photo spot in the center. Instead, walk to the far left corner – fewer crowds, and you can capture the warriors without tourists in the frame. Spend 45 minutes in Pit 1, 30 minutes in Pit 2 (it has the kneeling archer), and 20 minutes in Pit 3. Leave by 10:30 AM to avoid the peak surge.
Afternoon: Ancient City Wall (Enter at South Gate)
Address: Xi'an City Wall, South Gate (Yongningmen), Beilin District.
How to get from Warriors: Take bus 306 back to Fangzhicheng Metro, then Line 2 to Yongningmen station, Exit D. Total time: 1 hour.
Ticket: 54 RMB (adult). Rent a bike for 45 RMB per 90 minutes.
Here's the catch: most tourists rent a bike immediately. But the south gate's bike rental queue can be 30 minutes long. Instead, walk 200 meters east inside the wall to the second rental point – no line. Cycling the whole wall takes 1.5 hours if you stop for photos. I strongly recommend cycling the west and south sections; the east side is under renovation and not scenic.
Best photo time: 4:00 PM – the light hits the watchtower perfectly. Avoid noon: the wall has zero shade.
Day 2: Muslim Quarter & Shaanxi History Museum
Morning: Shaanxi History Museum (Book 14 Days in Advance!)
Address: 91 Xiaozhai East Road, Yanta District.
Metro: Line 2 or 3 to Xiaozhai station, Exit E, then walk 5 minutes.
Ticket: Free for the basic exhibition, but you MUST reserve a slot on the official WeChat mini-program. The free tickets are released in batches 14 days ahead. They sell out within minutes. If you can't get one, buy the 'Treasures of Shaanxi' exhibition ticket (30 RMB) which also gives access to the free areas.
Pro tip: Head straight to the Tang Dynasty mural hall (extra 270 RMB, worth it if you love history). Most tourists skip it, but it's incredibly detailed and never crowded.
Late Morning: Grand Wild Goose Pagoda (Optional)
If you have energy, walk 15 minutes from the museum to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Entrance to the temple grounds is 40 RMB, climbing the pagoda is 25 RMB. Honestly, I find it overpriced. The view from the top is just the city skyline. I'd suggest skipping and saving time for the Muslim Quarter.
Afternoon & Evening: Muslim Quarter Food Crawl
Location: Beiyuanmen Street (enter from Drum Tower).
Getting there from museum: Take metro line 2 to Zhonglou station, Exit A, and walk 5 minutes.
No ticket needed. This is the heart of Xi'an's food scene. But be wary: the main street is a tourist trap with overpriced snacks.
My personal must-try spots (only locals know these):
- Yang's Spicy Lamb Skewers (at Dapiyuan alley, 50 meters north of the Drum Tower intersection): 2 RMB per skewer, perfectly charred. I always order 20.
- Lao Jia's Biang Biang Noodles (inside a tiny shop next to the Great Mosque entrance): 15 RMB a bowl, chewy and heavy with chili oil. Cash only.
- Jia San's Sweet Dumplings (on Xiyangshi Street): 10 RMB for 8 pieces, sesame filling – a refreshing end to the spice.
Avoid: The 'Persimmon Cake' sold on the main street – it's stale and mass-produced. Head to the covered market near the west gate for fresh ones.
Ticket Booking Nightmares (Solved)
Every foreign traveler I've met struggles with the digital reservation system. Here's the deal:
- Terracotta Warriors: Use WeChat mini-program '秦始皇帝陵博物院' (search it in Chinese). You need a Chinese phone number to register. If you don't have one, ask your hotel to help.
- Shaanxi History Museum: Same mini-program mess. The museum also releases a small number of tickets on site, but only for the 30 RMB exhibition. If you're desperate, line up by 8 AM.
- City Wall: You can buy at the gate with cash or card. No reservation needed.
Credit card warning: Most official platforms only accept WeChat Pay or Alipay. International Visa/Mastercard rarely work. Have your hotel staff or Chinese friend pay for you, and reimburse them.
