Quick Look Inside
Three hours. That’s how long my clients waited in the sun at the South Gate last week. Forget the glossy brochures—if you don’t know the exact WeChat mini-program trick, you aren’t getting in.
Here is exactly how to skip the queues, handle the payment nightmare, and see the real Xi'an metro network in under two hours. I’ve been guiding here for eight years, and the metro is the only way I move. Taxis? They’ll rip you off during rush hour. Buses? Good luck reading the Chinese signs. The metro is clean, fast, and surprisingly easy once you know the flow.
Why the Metro Beats Taxis Every Time
I always tell my clients: during peak hours (8-9am, 5-7pm), a taxi from the city center to the Terracotta Warriors can take 90 minutes and cost 150 RMB. The metro + bus combo takes 75 minutes and costs 9 RMB. The difference is brutal. Plus, metro stations have English signs, and the announcements are in both Chinese and English. You can’t get lost.
Core Lines & Which Station to Use
Xi'an currently has 4 main metro lines (1, 2, 3, 4) plus the Airport Line. Here’s the cheat sheet:
| Line | Color | Key Stations for Tourists | First/Last Train |
|---|---|---|---|
| Line 1 | Blue | Muslim Quarter (Sajinqiao), East Gate | 6:00 – 23:00 |
| Line 2 | Red | Bell Tower, South Gate (Yongningmen), Xi'an North Railway | 6:00 – 23:30 |
| Line 3 | Purple | Big Wild Goose Pagoda (Dayanta), Chang'an Park | 6:00 – 22:40 |
| Line 4 | Green | Xi'an Railway Station, Daming Palace, Tang Paradise | 6:00 – 23:00 |
| Airport Line | Silver | Airport West — North Guangzhou (Line 2 Transfer) | 6:00 – 22:00 |
I always use Line 2 the most. It runs straight under the city’s spine and connects to almost every transfer point. For the Terracotta Warriors though, you must transfer to a bus at the North Guangzhou station – more on that later.
Buying Tickets Without a Chinese ID
Here is the catch: most ticket machines only accept cash or Alipay/WeChat Pay. If you don’t have Chinese mobile payment, you are stuck. What I do with my groups:
- Option 1: Get a physical Xi'an One Card at the service counter. Costs 18 RMB deposit, refundable. You tap in/out. Only cash accepted for the deposit, but after that you can top up with cash at any station.
- Option 2: Use the Alipay 'Transport' function. Even if you haven't linked a Chinese bank card, you can top up small amounts via international credit card (Visa, Mastercard). Yes, it works now in Xi'an. I tested it last month with my own Visa card.
- Option 3: Buy single-ride tokens. Insert 1, 5, 10, 20 RMB notes. Most machines accept crumpled notes, but if you have a torn bill, forget it.

Top Attractions Reachable by Metro
Terracotta Warriors
No metro goes directly there. The smartest route: Take Line 2 to North Guangzhou Station. Exit from Exit D, then walk 100m to the bus stop for Bus 914 or 915. These buses go straight to the Terracotta Warriors in about 60 minutes (9 RMB). Or take the official tourist bus from the same spot (15 RMB). The bus drops you at the parking lot, then it’s a 10-minute walk or free shuttle to the entrance.
Best time to arrive: 3pm. I know most guides say morning, but I bring my groups at 3pm. The crowds thin out significantly after 2:30pm, and the light in Pit 1 around 4pm is magical. The site closes at 5pm, but you have enough time.
Muslim Quarter & Bell Tower
Bell Tower Station (Line 2), Exit C. Take one step outside and you're on the main drag. The Muslim Quarter (Huimin Street) starts about 200m north. Walk straight, and you'll hit the food stalls. I recommend the Yang Rou Pao Mo (bread soaked in lamb soup) at Lao Sun Jia – it’s 20 RMB a bowl, spicy but not overwhelming. Bring cash; no cards accepted.
Big Wild Goose Pagoda (Dayanta)
Line 3, Dayanta Station. Exit B, then walk east 500m. You’ll see the pagoda from the square. The night view with the fountain show (free, 8pm and 9pm) is stunning. Don’t pay for the temple entry unless you want to climb the pagoda (20 RMB). I always skip it – but the grounds are lovely.
Ancient City Wall
Get off at Yongningmen Station (Line 2). Exit A1 leads you straight to the South Gate ticket booth. The wall is 14km long. Rent a bicycle (45 RMB for 2 hours) or walk a section. I tell my clients: go up around 5pm, watch the sunset, and descend by 7pm when the lights come on. Don’t rent a tandem bike – they’re heavy and annoy other cyclists.
Common Mistakes I See Tourists Make
- Using the wrong exit at Bell Tower. Exit C is the only one with escalators and direct access to the pedestrian street. Other exits force you up long stairs or through construction zones.
- Trying to buy a metro card with a foreign credit card at the machine. It won’t work. Use cash or the Alipay top-up trick I mentioned.
- Heading to the Terracotta Warriors at 9am like every other tourist. I’ve seen queues of 45 minutes just to buy tickets. If you go at 3pm, you walk straight in. Trust me.
- Not downloading an offline map. The metro has free WiFi (China Mobile only) but it’s slow. Install Maps.me or Baidu Maps (English version) before you go.
