Came for the Western Xia tombs and stayed for the food and vibe. Yinchuan is so underrated! The tombs at sunrise were hauntingly beautiful with the Helan Mountains as a backdrop. The city itself is easy to get around, taxis are cheap, and the night market was buzzing with grilled skewers and cold, tangy yogurt drinks. My partner and I felt completely safe walking back to our hotel late at night. We're already planning a return trip for the Xixia culture festival.
As someone who loves plants and quiet spots, Yinchuan completely won me over. Zhongshan Park in autumn was a dream – golden leaves, calm ponds, and hardly any crowds. It felt so lush for a region surrounded by dry landscapes. I also took a day trip down to Shapotou from the city, and the contrast between the desert dunes and the Yellow River was surreal. Three days wasn't enough. Highly recommend adding Yinchuan to your route through China.
Loved every minute in Yinchuan! The blend of Han, Hui, and other cultures is visible everywhere, from the architecture to the food stalls. We visited the Nanguan Grand Mosque and wandered around the old streets nearby – the smells of spices, grilled meat, and fresh bread were incredible. The locals were genuinely friendly and helped us order without a word of Chinese. Make sure to try the hand-pulled lamian and eight-treasure tea. This place is a hidden gem that deserves way more attention.
Really impressed by how clean and spacious Yinchuan feels. The riverside paths are perfect for an evening stroll, and the Helan Mountain rock art was absolutely worth the drive. We didn't have time for the Western Xia tombs, but the city itself surprised us with its relaxed pace. Only downside: attractions are spread out, so you really need a car or a patient driver. The local lamb dishes and sweet dates from nearby farms were amazing though.
Had high hopes after seeing so many glowing posts. The drum tower and old city areas are okay, but honestly a lot of the newer parts feel like every other Chinese city. The weather was dry and dusty, and my hotel couldn't quite keep the heating steady. I did love the Muslim Quarter street food, but I wouldn't call Yinchuan a must-visit. Fine for a short stopover, not much more.
Yinchuan exceeded every expectation. The Western Xia mausoleums are hauntingly beautiful, especially at sunset. I also took a day trip to Sand Lake and rode a camel across the dunes—surreal. The local market near Yuhuang Pavilion had the best dried dates and goji berries I've ever tasted. Can't wait to come back with my family. A perfect trip.
