Honestly I wanted to love Jilin but it didn't quite click for me. We booked a 'tea house experience' in the old town area of Jilin City but it turned out to be a shop that kept pushing expensive tea sets. The museum was closed without much notice, and the guesthouse we stayed at had ok heating but the shower water kept going cold. The scenery along the riverside was nice enough, but I left feeling a little disappointed for the price we paid.
We spent two days around Changbaishan and the scenery is gorgeous, no argument. The boardwalks around the waterfalls are convenient and the volcanic landscape is like another planet. Only reason I'm not giving 5 is the weather changed so quickly and the shuttle system was a bit chaotic when it started drizzling. Still, the birch forest was breathtaking and the local place near our hotel served excellent tofu stew. Good trip overall.
Jilin city in winter is pure magic. The rime ice on the trees along the Songhua River looked like something from a fairytale — each branch glistened in the morning light, and the mist rising from the water made everything feel surreal. Locals told us the best viewing time is before 9am and they were right. We took the little train to the island and I couldn't stop taking photos. It's not super touristy, which I loved. Definitely a hidden gem.
Came for the skiing at Beidahu, stayed for the hot springs. The snow conditions were perfect in early January — powdery snow everywhere, no lift lines, and the runs had amazing views of frosted pines. My boots were cold but the onsen-style pools at the base fixed that immediately. Price felt fair for the quality. If you love winter sports, Jilin is wildly underrated.
Spent a week in Jilin Province and I'm still thinking about the trip. The drive from Changchun to Changbaishan was long, but once we saw the crater lake, wow — it was so clear and blue I actually cried a little. The air smelled of pine and the hiking trails were well kept. Our guide even showed us wild ginseng. The Korean-style cold noodles in Yanbian were a whole experience too. Honestly one of the best trips I've ever had in China.
Jilin City in January is freezing, but that's exactly why the rime ice is so magical. I came at sunrise and stood on the bank of the Songhua River while the fog turned the trees into white glass sculptures. It was so quiet and strange and beautiful that I almost cried. Locals were taking photos and sharing hand warmers with me, and there was a little tent selling hot soy milk nearby. I think I took over three hundred pictures. The whole morning felt like a dream I didn't want to wake up from.
