If you're a photographer, this place is heaven. From the lotus blooms in summer to the misty winter mornings, every season offers a different palette. I captured some incredible shots of the cable cars crossing the lake. The only downside is that the paid parking was a bit pricey, but the scenery more than makes up for it. Will definitely return!

What a gem! I spent the whole morning just sitting by the water, watching the birds and the slow sailboats. The air feels so fresh compared to the city. I also tried some street food nearby – the grilled fish was delicious. Highly recommend coming early to avoid the midday crowds. One of the best free attractions I've ever visited!

A lovely escape from the city! We rented bikes and cycled along the eastern shore – the breeze was perfect and the wildflowers in bloom added a pop of color. The sunset here is magical, painting the sky in shades of pink and orange. Only reason I'm not giving a 5 is that some of the public restrooms were closed, but overall a fantastic day out.

Honestly, I was a bit let down. The lake itself is huge and scenic from afar, but the water near the shore has a greenish algae tint and a slight smell in some spots. The walking paths are decent but could use more benches. We went on a weekday and it wasn't too crowded, but I expected it to be cleaner. Not terrible, but not as amazing as I'd hoped.

Dianchi Lake is absolutely stunning! The water sparkles under the sun, and the view of the mountains in the distance is breathtaking. We took the cable car up to the hill station and the panoramic view from above was worth every penny. Clean pathways, friendly locals, and plenty of photo ops. Definitely a must-see if you're in Kunming!

We went on a Sunday and the lakeside promenade was buzzing with locals flying kites and families picnicking. The sunset over the water was honestly one of the most beautiful I've ever seen—pinks and purples reflecting off the ripples. A magical end to our Kunming trip!

Dianchi Lake is a massive, serene lake with lots of birdlife—saw egrets and even a few cormorants! The Haigeng Park section is well maintained and great for a peaceful walk. Only wish there were more shaded benches. But the natural vibe is unbeatable.

Absolutely loved my afternoon cycling along the eastern shore of Dianchi! The breeze was perfect, the sky was clear, and the wildflowers along the path were a bonus. Best spot to just sit and watch the boats—felt like a postcard. Highly recommend renting a bike!

I'd heard so much hype about Dianchi Lake, but honestly felt let down. The water is murky, there's trash along some parts of the boardwalk, and the wind made it unpleasant. The mountain views are nice from a distance, but I wouldn't go out of my way again.

Dianchi Lake is gorgeous on a clear day, with the mountains in the background and the water shimmering. But honestly, the algae bloom near the shore is pretty bad in spots—smells a bit like a fish market. Still worth a visit for the sunset, just don't expect to swim.

Took my kids here and they loved feeding the seagulls! The lake itself is beautiful — clear skies, cool breeze, and lots of green space to run around. We walked from Haigeng Park to the dam, which took about an hour. Only downside: the entrance fee to certain sections felt a bit steep for what you get. But the fresh air and happy kids made it worth it.

One of the best bike rides I’ve ever done! I cycled the full loop around Dianchi Lake — about 100 km — and every turn offered a different view: wildflowers, fishing boats, and even a few local farmers selling fresh fruit. The path is mostly flat and well-marked. I stopped at a tiny village for noodles and chatted with an old fisherman. Pure magic. Highly recommend for active travelers!

Honestly, I was a bit let down. I’d heard so much about Dianchi Lake, but when I got there the water looked murky with patches of algae, and the wind carried a faint sewage smell in some spots. Too many selfie sticks and vendors shouting. Maybe it’s better in a different season, but my visit felt more like a tourist trap than a natural wonder.

Pretty impressive lake — it’s huge! The scenery is nice, especially with the mountains in the background. I rented a bike and rode along part of the shoreline. However, some sections near the tourist piers had a bit of litter and the public restrooms weren’t well maintained. Still a pleasant day out, just not flawless.

Absolutely stunning! I went to Dianchi Lake just before sunset and it was magical. The whole sky turned orange and pink, reflecting off the water. Hundreds of seagulls were flying around, and some even came close enough to feed by hand. The boardwalk was clean and not too crowded on a weekday. Definitely a must-see in Kunming — I'll never forget that view.

One of the best natural spots I've visited in China. The lake stretches so far you can't see the other end. I went early morning and had the view almost to myself – peaceful and breathtaking. The nearby park is well kept and entry was cheap. 5/5 without hesitation.

Honestly disappointed. The lake is polluted in some sections and there was a weird smell near the shore. The walking path is nice but the litter was off-putting. I hope the local authorities improve the cleanliness because the potential is huge, but right now it's just okay.

We took a boat ride on Dianchi Lake and it was magical. The water sparkled under the afternoon sun, and the breeze felt refreshing. The mountains in the background make for incredible photos. A must-do when in Yunnan – four stars only because the parking was a bit chaotic.

It's a nice place but honestly a bit overhyped. The lake itself is huge and scenic, but the surrounding facilities are quite basic. We struggled to find a decent café nearby, and the public restrooms were not well maintained. Worth a quick visit if you're in Kunming, but don't expect a premium experience.

Absolutely stunning views of the lake especially at sunset. The water was calm and the whole area felt serene. We rented bikes and cycled along the shore – perfect way to spend a relaxed afternoon. Highly recommend for nature lovers!

Dianchi Lake Travel FAQ

Is Dianchi Lake worth visiting if I only have 4 hours in Kunming?
Absolutely, but be strategic. From Kunming city center, take a taxi directly to Haigeng Park (25 minutes). Spend 2 hours walking the north pier for bird watching and photos, then grab noodles at Yunwei Xiaoguan. Skip the boat ride to save time. I've done this with layover tourists, and they loved it without feeling rushed.
Can I swim in Dianchi Lake?
No, swimming is prohibited due to water quality concerns. The lake has undergone cleanup efforts, but it's not safe for swimming. Stick to pedal boating or enjoy the views from shore. I once had a client ask this, and local guards will stop you if you try.
What's the best spot for sunset photos without crowds?
Head to the small hill behind Huating Temple in Xishan. It's a 10-minute hike from the temple entrance, and you'll get an unobstructed view of the lake with the city in the distance. Most tourists cluster at the main viewpoints, so this is my go-to secret. Bring a tripod—the light fades fast.
Are there English-speaking guides available at the lake?
Not really. The official guides at ticket offices often speak limited English. I recommend booking a private tour through platforms like Trip.com or Klook in advance. Or, use audio guides from the "Kunming Travel" app—it's free and covers key spots.
How do I avoid the tour bus crowds at Haigeng Park?
Tour buses arrive between 10 AM and 2 PM. Visit before 9 AM or after 3 PM. Alternatively, enter from the south gate instead of the main entrance; it's less known and usually empty. I've guided groups this way for years, and we barely see any buses.
