The scenic area is huge and the main pagoda is definitely a sight to behold. The gardens are lovely for a stroll. However, I found the signage to be confusing — several times I wasn't sure which direction led to the exit or to the museum. Also, some exhibition halls were closed when I visited, which was disappointing. Still, a solid 4-star experience if you plan your route in advance.
A deeply moving pilgrimage site. From the moment I stepped through the gate, I felt a profound sense of peace. The relic of the Buddha’s finger bone was the highlight for me — seeing it enshrined in the pagoda was an emotional experience. The monks chanting in the background, the incense, the sheer devotion of other visitors — it all came together perfectly. I will come back every year. Namo Buddhaya!
Honestly, a bit underwhelming for the price. The entrance fee is steep (¥120 last I checked), and while the architecture is impressive, the whole place feels overly commercialized — souvenir shops everywhere, loudspeakers blaring announcements. The relics are interesting if you're into that, but I expected a more sacred, quiet atmosphere. Ended up spending only two hours and felt that was enough.
Really impressive site with a lot of history and beautiful grounds. The main pagoda is stunning and the temple complex is well-maintained. My only small complaints: there were hardly any decent food options inside, so come with a packed lunch, and the place was absolutely swarming with tour groups by midday. Still, it’s well worth the trip — just go early to beat the crowds.
Absolutely blown away by the sheer scale and serenity of the Famen Cultural Scenic Area. Walking up to the He Ten Stupa under a clear blue sky felt almost surreal — the gold glinting in the sun, the chanting in the distance. Every corner is photogenic, and the museum exhibits are world-class. If you appreciate Buddhist art and grand architecture, this is a must-visit. I spent four hours and still felt I rushed through.
