Why You Need This Map (Not the Free One)
First off – the free maps are often outdated. They mark the Drum Tower and a few temples, but they leave out the tiny lanes (hutongs) where the real vibe lives. I once had a couple spend 40 minutes walking in circles trying to find a tea house that had closed two years ago. This guide updates everything: opening hours, ticket prices (which change often), and the best photo spots that aren't even on the official map.

Best Walking Route – 3 Hours or All Day
Most tourists just wander randomly and end up missing half the good stuff. I've designed two routes: one for a quick morning, one to fill a full day (with food breaks).
3-Hour Express Route (If you're short on time)
- Start at South Gate (Yongtai Gate) – walk straight north on the main axis.
- Stop at Shanhua Temple (15 min inside).
- Continue to Drum Tower – climb for photo (10 min).
- Turn left (west) to Nine-Dragon Wall (10 min).
- End at Huayan Temple (45 min minimum – it's huge).
- Exits north gate, grab a taxi back.
Total walking time: about 2 hours plus 1 hour for temples. Doable before lunch.
Full-Day Route (With Lazy Stops)
- 9:00 – Huayan Temple (it's cooler in the morning, fewer crowds).
- 11:00 – Coffee break at Hutong Café (just east of Huayan, on the lane behind the ticket booth).
- 11:30 – Nine-Dragon Wall (10 min walk).
- 12:00 – Lunch at Lao Wang Hand-Pulled Noodles (see food section).
- 13:30 – Drum Tower climb (skip if it's too hot – go to the Ancient City Wall instead, it's shaded on the east side).
- 14:30 – Rent a bike on the City Wall. Cycle the full loop (1 hour).
- 16:00 – Visit Shanhua Temple (quieter now).
- 17:30 – Catch sunset at the northeast corner of the City Wall – best view of the old city roofs.
- 19:00 – Dinner at Temple Garden Restaurant (see below).
Hidden Eateries Your Map Misses
The official brochure lists two overpriced tourist restaurants on the main street. Avoid them. Here's where I take my own guests.
Lao Wang Hand-Pulled Noodles
- Address: Lane 3, North Street (behind the Drum Tower, look for a red sign with yellow characters).
- Specialty: Spicy beef noodle soup (medium heat, savory broth) – I always order extra fried tofu cubes (5 RMB).
- Price: 15-25 RMB per bowl.
- Payment: WeChat Pay / Alipay only – no international cards. The owner is nice and can call a colleague to help you pay if you only have cash.
- Wait time: Lunch rush 12:00-13:00, about 10-15 min.
- My note: No English menu, but they have a picture menu. Point at photo #3 for the signature bowl.
Temple Garden Restaurant
- Address: Across from Huayan Temple west gate, upstairs.
- Specialty: Vegetarian "mock meat" dishes – the kung pao “chicken” is actually made of soy protein and tastes shockingly real.
- Price: 40-60 RMB per person.
- Note: Accepts Visa/Mastercard (rare in the old city!).
- My tip: Sit on the balcony if free – you overlook the temple roofs. Evening lights come on at 18:30.
Where to Stay Inside the City Walls
You want to be inside the walls – outside is just modern Datong, and you'll miss the nighttime charm. I've stayed at most of these places myself (or dropped off clients).

Ticket & Money-Savers I Wish I Knew
Let me save you the annoyance. Here's the stuff that always trips up first-time visitors.
Digital Tickets – The WeChat Struggle
Almost every site now requires a digital ticket via WeChat mini-program. If you don't have WeChat Pay set up, you'll be stuck at the gate. Here's the workaround: Most hotels inside the city can buy the ticket for you if you hand them cash. I always tell my guests to ask the receptionist – they usually help for free. Alternatively, the ticket office at Huayan Temple still sells paper tickets (counter #3, English-speaking staff).
Combo vs. Individual
As I mentioned, the 80 RMB combo covers the three big spots. Individual tickets: Huayan 50, Shanhua 35, Drum Tower free – that's 85 total, so you save 5 RMB with combo. Not huge, but it also gives you priority entry at Huayan (shorter line). Do it.
Free Entry Times
Every Wednesday morning (before 11 AM), the Ancient City Wall is free for everyone – no ticket needed. Also, the Drum Tower is free all day for seniors (65+) with ID, and children under 1.2 m get in free everywhere.
