It sounds simple—hop on a boat, cross the water, enjoy the island. But between the wrong pier, cash-only ticket booths, and peak-hour chaos, I’ve seen plenty of people stuck. Why the Gulangyu Island Ferry Confuses Foreigners (And How to Fix It)
First thing first: there are two main passenger piers in Xiamen that serve Gulangyu Island. Most tourists end up at the wrong one because online maps aren’t clear. The local ferry system also changed a few years ago—some old guides still show the wrong info.
The Two Terminals: Which One Do You Take?
Dongdu International Cruise Terminal (东渡国际邮轮中心) – This is the main departure point for foreign tourists heading to Gulangyu. Address: No. 199, Donggang Road, Xiamen (厦门市东港路199号). Take a taxi or Didi (show the Chinese address). It’s about 15 minutes from Zhongshan Road area.
Sanqiutian Pier (三丘田码头) – This is the arrival pier on Gulangyu Island. Most ferries from Dongdu arrive here. The return trip from Gulangyu also uses Sanqiutian to get back to Dongdu.
Avoid the local ferry at First Pier (轮渡码头)—that’s for Xiamen residents only. Foreigners will be turned away.
International Credit Cards? Not Here.
Biggest pain point: the ticket booth at Dongdu terminal does not accept international credit cards. Cash (Chinese yuan) or Alipay/WeChat Pay only. If you don’t have Alipay set up, bring enough cash to buy a ticket. A round-trip ticket costs around 35 RMB (about $5 USD).

Online Booking via Trip.com (The Easiest Way)
Use Trip.com or Klook to book your ticket in advance. Search “Gulangyu Island ferry ticket” and choose the “Foreign Tourist” option if available. You’ll need your passport number. The system shows available time slots. Book at least one day ahead—especially on weekends or Chinese holidays. Once booked, you’ll get a QR code. Show that at the terminal gate.
At the Ticket Booth: What to Prepare
If you decide to buy on the spot (which I don’t recommend during peak season), here’s the drill:
- Go to Dongdu International Cruise Terminal. Look for the “Foreigners Ticket” counter (usually window 5 or 6).
- Hand over your passport and cash (35 RMB round-trip, or about 50 RMB for the luxury sightseeing boat).
- You’ll get a paper ticket. Don’t lose it—you need it for return.
- The return ticket is open: you can come back any time within 20 days on the same route.
Gulangyu Island Ferry Schedule and Which Pier to Use
Ferries run from 7:10 AM to 5:30 PM (winter) or 6:30 PM (summer) for outbound trips. Return ferries run until around 11:00 PM from Sanqiutian Pier, but the late ones are less frequent. Check the official schedule on Trip.com.

Which pier should you use for return? During the day, return to Dongdu. After 6 PM, the ferry goes to the Zhongshan Road Pier (closer to downtown). That’s convenient if you’re heading to the shopping street.
Real Experiences: What I Wish I Knew Before Boarding
I once had a couple from Germany show up at the wrong pier (the resident-only one) at 9 AM. They missed their slot, had to take a taxi to Dongdu, and by the time they got tickets it was 11 AM—right in the crowd peak. They spent an hour in line. Here’s what else I’ve learned:
- WeChat mini-programs are a pain – Most online guides tell you to use a WeChat mini-program. Good luck with that if your WeChat isn’t linked to a Chinese bank card. Skip it and use Trip.com. Seriously.
- Your phone battery will die – You’ll be scanning QR codes, using navigation, taking photos. Bring a power bank. There are charging stations on the ferry but they’re few.
- The luxury ferry isn’t worth it – There’s a 50 RMB sightseeing boat that takes 50 minutes instead of 20. It goes around the island is basically a waste of time. Get the standard 35 RMB round-trip ticket.
- Google Maps shows the resident pier as the main one – Do not trust it. Use Apple Maps or the Chinese map app (Gaode) but switch to English. Type in “Dongdu International Cruise Terminal” – that’s the right place.
