Most tourists flood in between 10:00 and 14:00. That's when the bus convoys from Zhangjiajie arrive. If you show up at 07:15, you'll be among the first in line — I've done this 20 times. The cable car queues are under 10 minutes. By 09:00, you're already on the mountain enjoying empty walkways.

How to Get to Tianmen Mountain (Transportation Guide)
The cable car station is right in downtown Zhangjiajie, about 10 minutes by taxi from the train station. Address: 张家界市永定区官黎坪. Tell your driver “Tianmen Mountain Cable Car Station”.
- From Zhangjiajie Railway Station: Taxi ~15 RMB, or bus line 5. Walk 2 minutes.
- From Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport: Taxi ~30 RMB, 15 minutes.
- From Wulingyuan (where the national park is): You need to take a bus back to the city center first (1 hour, 20 RMB), then follow above. I recommend staying in the city the night before your Tianmen visit.
One thing that always confuses visitors: there's also a bus entrance on the other side of the mountain. If you book a ticket that includes the bus ride up, you'll be taken there. But for most tourists, the cable car up is the classic experience. Make sure your combo ticket specifies “cable car up”.
What About the Cable Car Operating Hours?
The cable car runs from 07:30 to 18:00 (peak season) and 08:00 to 17:30 (off-peak). The last cable car up is usually 16:00, but they may let you on later if you have a ticket — don't count on it. Weather is a gamble. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer the clearest skies. Summer is humid and often foggy until 10:00. Winter can be stunning with snow, but the cable car may be delayed. I personally love November — crisp air, fewer tourists, and the autumn colors around the temple are gorgeous.
