Here I am again, guiding a family from Boston up the steep steps. Twelve years of leading tours in China — and Mutianyu Great Wall still surprises me every time. But the surprise is not always good. Last month I watched a couple get stuck at the parking lot, their WeChat Pay wouldn't work, and the taxi driver didn't take cash. Pure chaos.

Why Mutianyu Instead of Badaling?
Simple — Badaling is a human zoo. I have seen tourists queuing two hours just to get on the cable car. Mutianyu is less crowded, better restored, and offers a more authentic Great Wall experience. It's also closer to the city? No, actually it's slightly farther, but the drive is scenic and traffic is lighter. Most foreigners I bring here thank me after. The wall here feels like a real ancient structure, not a theme park.
Ticket Prices & How to Book

How to book: Use the official WeChat mini-program "慕田峪长城" (search in WeChat). But if you don't have WeChat Pay, ask your hotel to help you book via Trip.com or a local travel agency. Never buy from touts at the entrance — they often sell overpriced combo tickets you don't need.
Opening hours: Peak season (Mar 16–Nov 15): 7:30–18:00 (last entry 17:30). Off-peak: 7:30–17:00. The cable car stops running 30 minutes before closing, so don't cut it close.
Getting to Mutianyu (Transport)
Here are your options from downtown Beijing:
- Taxi / Didi: Around 1.5–2 hours, cost 400–500 CNY one way. Best for groups. Make sure the driver takes you to the main ticket entrance, not the fake one near the far parking lot. I always tell my guests: set the destination as "慕田峪长城停车场 (P1)".
- Bus 916 (Express): From Dongzhimen bus station, take 916快 to Huairou Beidajie, then switch to H23 or H24 to the wall. Total ~2.5 hours, cost ~20 CNY. Not recommended for first-timers without Chinese skills.
- Private tour / shuttle: Many tour operators offer door-to-door minibuses for around 200–300 CNY per person. I've used Trip.com shuttle services a few times — they're reliable but require booking 1 day ahead.
Pro tip: Don't take the black taxis that hang around the bus station — they might offer a cheap ride but then pressure you to use their ticket agent.
Best Time to Visit & Avoid Crowds
Weekdays are ideal. If you must go on a weekend, arrive before 8am. The worst hours are 10am–2pm when tour buses unload. I always start climbing around 7:30am — the morning mist over the wall is breathtaking and you'll have the towers almost to yourself.
Weather: Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are best. Summer is hot and crowded; winter is icy but quiet. The wall gets slippery in winter — wear proper hiking boots. And yes, afternoon sun is brutal on the south-facing sections, so bring sunscreen.
What to Do on the Wall
Most people go from the cable car drop-off (watchtower 14) and walk west toward watchtower 20. That's the highest restored section. The climb from tower 14 to 20 is steep but gives the best views.
My favorite loop: Take the cable car up to tower 14, walk west to tower 20, then come back and take the chairlift down (or toboggan if you're brave). The whole loop takes about 2.5 hours with stops for photos. If you're fit, you can extend to tower 23, but the path is unpaved.
Don't miss the toboggan slide — it's a plastic sled that zips you down from tower 6 to the exit. Hilarious fun, but watch for speed bumps. I once had a client's hat fly off mid-ride.
Common Mistakes & Insider Tips
- Buying water at the top: A bottle costs 15 CNY on the wall vs 3 CNY at the base. Buy before you go up.
- Using the toilet at the entrance: Long queues. Use the WC at the parking lot or at the bus station before arriving.
- Not carrying cash: Some food stalls and the toboggan ticket counter only take cash or WeChat Pay. Bring at least 200 CNY in small bills.
- Wearing nice shoes: The steps are uneven and there are no railings on some sections. I've seen flip-flops — don't be that person.
