Miss the last entry, and you'll be staring at a locked gate. Or worse, you'll show up at 7 AM in winter and find the ticket booth deserted. Let me save you that headache.

Beihai Park operates on a seasonal schedule. The park gates open and close at different times depending on the time of year, and the last admission is usually 30–60 minutes before closing. Don't rely on 24/7 info; check the table below.

Yes. The park is occasionally closed for maintenance or state events. Rare, but it happens. Always check the official WeChat account “畅游公园” (Changyou Gongyuan) one day before your visit. It's in Chinese, so ask your hotel to check for you.
Ticket Prices & How to Buy
The standard ticket is just 20 RMB for adults (peak season) and 15 RMB in winter. Seniors over 60 get in free, and children under 1.2 meters are free too. There's also a combo ticket (including the White Pagoda and the round city) for 20 RMB extra — worth it if you want to climb up.
Can you buy on site? Technically yes. But in peak season the queue can be 20 minutes long. And here's the catch: they prefer digital payment (WeChat Pay or Alipay). International credit cards? Not accepted at the ticket booth. I've seen dozens of tourists frantically searching for an ATM. Don't be that person.
What about the combination ticket?
The combo ticket (40 RMB in summer) includes the White Pagoda (Baita) and the Round City (Tuancheng). If you're only there for a quick stroll, skip it. But if you want the iconic view of the pagoda reflected in the water, buy the combo. You can also purchase it separately inside, but it's a small queue anyway.
Best Time to Visit Beihai Park
Most guides tell you to go in the morning. I disagree. Let me explain.
Summer: Midday sun is brutal — there's very little shade on the main lake path. The best time? Late afternoon, around 4:00 PM. The light turns golden, the heat drops, and the crowds thin out after 5 PM. Plus, you can stay until 8:30 PM and see the park in twilight. Magical.
Winter: It gets dark by 5:30 PM. So go early, but not at opening (6:30 AM) because it's freezing and the lake might be frozen solid. I'd recommend 9:00–11:00 AM, when the sun is up but the crowds are still low. And bundle up — the wind off the lake cuts right through.
Photography sweet spots
The best photos are from the East Gate area, capturing the pagoda across the lake. Come at 4:30 PM in summer for a warm glow. The bridge near the South Gate also works well at sunrise, but honestly, the park doesn't open early enough for sunrise in summer (6 AM is still before sunrise in June).
How to Get to Beihai Park
The park has several gates. The main ones are the South Gate (most popular), East Gate, and North Gate. Here's the quickest way:
- Metro: Line 6, Beihai North station (北海北). Exit B. Walk 5 minutes south. Look for the long queue at the East Gate — that's where the ticket booth is.
- Bus: Routes 5, 101, 103, 109, 124, 128, 观光1路, 观光2路. Get off at Beihai Park stop. The South Gate is right there.
- Taxi / Didi: Tell the driver “北海公园南门” (Bei Hai Gong Yuan Nan Men). Cost from Tiananmen is about 20-30 RMB.
One more thing: The South Gate entrance has a narrow sidewalk and can get super congested. If you hate crowds, enter through the East Gate (closer to the metro) or the North Gate (quieter, but less iconic view upon entry).
Insider Tips from a Local Guide
After dozens of trips, I've collected a few non-obvious pointers:
- Toilets: The public restroom near the South Gate ticket booth is small and often has a line. Use the one at the metro station before you enter, or head to the ones inside near the lake (they're bigger).
- Boat rentals: The paddleboat and electric boat rentals close at 5 PM (summer) and 3 PM (winter). If you want to row on the lake, go early in the day. Bring cash as deposit sometimes requires it.
- Food inside: There are a few stalls selling noodles and snacks, but they're overpriced and mediocre. I always tell my groups to eat at the nearby hutong restaurants on Qianhai Street after the visit.
- WeChat mini-program nightmare: The official ticket buying mini-program is only in Chinese, and it's glitchy. If you're struggling, just go to the ticket window and point at the price board. The staff see foreigners all day — they'll understand.
