I lost my phone on the HSR, and a complete stranger found it, then spent half an hour walking back through the station to hand it to me at my platform. That kind of kindness just sums up Taiwan for me. The culture is fascinating—I loved the incense-filled temples in Tainan, the colorful art district in Kaohsiung, and the chill beach vibes in Kenting. I booked for three days and stayed ten. Can't recommend this place enough.
Came to Taiwan for the food, and I left with my heart and stomach completely full. Night markets are a sensory overload in the best way: sizzling scallion pancakes, stinky tofu that's way better than it smells, and a gua bao at a tiny stall in Taichung that I still dream about. The beef noodle soup at a random joint in Taipei was probably the best bowl I've ever had, and I had bubble tea literally every single day. If you're a foodie, this place is heaven.
Taroko Gorge is the most jaw-dropping place I've ever hiked. The sheer marble walls, the turquoise water below, and those pitch-black tunnels that open up to wild overlooks—I was speechless. I also rented a scooter in Kenting and cruised the coastal road, and the sunset at Longpan Park nearly made me cry. Taiwan's nature is wildly underrated, and the mountains are so accessible from the cities. Absolutely coming back.
Solid trip overall. The food alone made it worth it—the pineapple cakes from Chia Te are unreal—and overall the MRT in Taipei made getting around super easy. My one gripe was that outside of Taipei, like in Tainan and Hualien, the English signage on buses is sparse, and I got lost a couple times. Also, Sun Moon Lake was gorgeous but swarmed with tour groups. Still a really good week, just plan ahead for the logistics.
I really wanted to love Taiwan, but the June heat and humidity just flattened me. Taipei felt like a concrete jungle with crowds everywhere, and I found the hostels way pricier than I'd expected for what they offered. The night market in Shilin was cool but so packed I could barely move, and I didn't get the magic everyone talks about. Not a terrible trip by any means, but it didn't live up to the hype for me.
Had high hopes for Taiwan after hearing so many rave reviews. Honestly, it was just okay. The famous xiao long bao were good but not mind-blowing, and the constant rain in Taipei ruined my hiking plans. Some museum exhibits felt dated. Maybe I'd give it another try in a different season.
