The most common and cheapest way. Buses depart from Shangri-La Bus Station (香格里拉客运站) at 68 Xiangyang Road. Buy your ticket at the counter or via Trip.com (they accept foreign credit cards). You'll need your passport—no exceptions.
- Schedule: 6:30 AM, 8:00 AM, 9:30 AM, and 12:00 PM daily. The ride takes about 4 hours (180 km via G214).
- Cost: ¥65–¥75 per person (cash or WeChat/Alipay). No card payments at the station—bring cash.
- Drop-off: Deqin County Bus Station. From there, you'll need another 30–40 minutes to reach Feilai Temple (see next section).
2. Shared Minivan (Best Balance of Cost & Comfort)
If you want flexibility without breaking the bank. Shared minivans (7–9 seats) gather near Duku Ancient Town (独克宗古城) entrance, especially around the East Gate. They leave when full—typically 7:30–10:00 AM.
- Cost: ¥100–¥120 per person.
- Duration: 3.5–4 hours, similar to bus but fewer stops.
- Drop-off: Drivers can take you directly to Feilai Temple—ask before boarding.
- Booking: Your hotel can help arrange one the night before. Or just show up early and look for minivans with “德钦” (Deqin) signs. Negotiate the price before getting in.
3. Private Car Hire (Flexible & Comfortable)
Best for small groups or photographers who want to control the schedule. You can hire a private car (sedan or SUV) with an English-speaking driver through Klook, Trip.com, or your hotel. Expect to pay ¥500–¥800 for a one-way trip (4–5 hours including photo stops).
Pros: Stop at Napa Lake, the first bend of the Jinsha River, and the Dongzhulin Monastery along the way. Cons: Not all drivers speak English—ask the hotel to confirm.

4. Self-Drive (For Adventurers with High-Altitude Experience)
Renting a car is possible but not recommended for first-timers. The G214 highway is well-paved but includes winding mountain roads above 3,400 meters and occasional livestock crossings. You'll need an International Driving Permit with a Chinese translation (check with your rental agency).
- Rental cost: ¥250–¥400/day for a basic sedan (from Shangri-La). Fuel to Deqin ~¥150.
- Navigation: Google Maps is useless. Download Amap (高德地图) or Apple Maps (works okay). Save offline maps.
- Parking: Feilai Temple has free parking. Some guesthouses charge ¥10–20.
Getting from Deqin to the Viewing Spots (Feilai Temple & More)
You'll arrive either at Deqin Bus Station or directly at Feilai Temple if you took a minivan/private car. From the bus station:
- Local bus (¥5): Look for the minibus marked “飞来寺” just outside the station. Runs until about 5 PM, but infrequent (every 40–60 min).
- Taxi (¥30–40): Most drivers won't use the meter—agree on price first. Show them this address: 云南省迪庆藏族自治州德钦县飞来寺.
- Walking: 6 km uphill—not advisable with luggage.
Once at Feilai Temple, you're at the prime sunrise viewpoint. Most guesthouses line the road facing the peaks. In the morning, just walk outside your hotel—no ticket needed for the public viewing platform. If you want the official Meili Snow Mountain Scenic Area (more angles), it's a 15-minute walk south; entrance ¥60, open 6:00 AM–4:00 PM.
Altitude Warning & TIPS
Feilai Temple sits at 3,450 meters—many people feel headaches or shortness of breath. Don't rush. Take it easy on arrival, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol. Your hotel likely sells small oxygen cans (¥20–30). I always tell my clients: if you feel dizzy, go to bed early. The sunrise is worth the wait.
I joined a shared minivan (pinche) from the old town. We were 7 people total, which kept costs low (around 100 RMB per person). The driver was a local Tibetan guy who played traditional music and told us legends about the sacred peaks. We stopped at the famous 'First Bend of the Yangtze River' overlook and had fresh yak butter tea at a roadside stall. The clouds cleared right as we arrived at Meili - pure luck!
